DAVINCI CODE headed for the big screen

imageVariety reported today that director Ron Howard will be helming a big-budget adaptation of Dan Brown’s novel The DaVinci Code. Howard will reunite with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman who he worked with on A Beautiful Mind.

The Davinci Code has been a real word-of-mouth favorite for the last year. It’s a slick, fast-paced read with some interesting and well-researched ideas. Dan Brown really knows how to pull a reader in and keep them interested. Once you’re finished with it though, you realize it’s nothing more than a well-crafted mainstream thriller. It should translate perfectly to a big dumb Hollywood summer movie, but if there’s a screenwriter alive that could screw it up, it’s probably Akiva Goldsman.

Jennifer Connelly steps into DARK WATER

image The remake of Hideo Nakata’s Dark Water is moving towards production. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Jennifer Connelly is in discussion to star and Brazillian director Walter Salles set to direct. The film revolves around the story of a mother and daughter haunted by the ghost of a young girl whose family once lived in their apartment building. The original film was a huge hit in Japan as was Hideo Nakata’s Ringu, which was recently re-made as The Ring starring Naomi Watts.

Interestingly enough, Jennifer Connelly was originally offered the lead role in The Ring but she turned it down because she didn’t want to do a horror film.

Dark Water is being produced by Mike Mechanic through his Disney-based production company Pandemonium Pictures.

CATWOMAN Revealed

Information is starting to leak out regarding the upcoming Catwoman movie starring Halle Berry. It definitely seems like this movie is aiming for the campiness that characterized the original TV series. Or maybe it isn’t intentional. We’ll see.First up is this glimpse of her costume from Time Magazine.

Next up are on-set pics from The Sun. The second pics shows Halle in an outfit that is a lot less revealing and quite a bit closer to the costume from Batman Returns.

Finally, here’s an excerpt from the text that accompanies the TIME article.
“The cat is finally out of the bag. HALLE BERRY slinks into a strapping new ensemble this week when filming starts in Vancouver for Catwoman. The Oscar-winning actress plays the Felonious Feline (see also: Princess of Plunder, Mistress of Malevolence) from the Batman series, a role made famous by Eartha Kitt in the ‘60s TV show and reinvented by a neoprene-clad Michelle Pfeiffer in 1992. Berry’s leather cat suit for the 2004 film is “very bare, very urban, very downtown,” she says. Her character, Patience Price, is a scientist at a cosmetics company who transforms into Catwoman - or should we say Sex Kitten?--to take on her nefarious boss, played by Sharon Stone. Benjamin Bratt as a detective is the love interest for Berry’s Catwoman, who is both villainess and heroine. “She’s not Superman,” Berry says. “She’s not trying to save the world.” Instead, like a pampered house pet, Berry says, “Catwoman is out to save herself.” Could be quite a purr-formance.”

UNDERWORLD spawns sequels

Underworld cleaned up at the box office in its opening weekend and now Variety is reporting that sequels are in the works. Screen Gems (a division of Sony) has signed Danny McBride and Len Wiseman to write a sequel with Wiseman again directing. The possibility of Underworld 3 will be explored when the first sequel is finished. Underworld 3 is currently as envisioned as a prequel. The studio is planning to fast-track the project, probably to secure Beckinsale while she is still affordable. Although, with her husband directing that might not be a problem. Beckinsale is currently filming Martin Scorcese’s The Aviator.
