MIRAMAX to distribute ZATOICHI
Harvey Weinstein fell in love with Takeshi Kitano’s ZATOICHI at the Toronto International Film Festival last weekend and ended up buying North American distribution rights. Miramax has kind of a lousy track record with Asian films. Hopefully they will actually release this sometime in the near future and hopefully it will be without a rap soundtrack.

HERO to get theatrical release
According to the MIRAMAX website, it looks like HERO might be getting a Winter theatrical release after all. Who knows with these guys though…
SPIDER-MAN 2 spoiler
Aint It Cool News reports that The Lizard will be making an appearance in the film. While it was already known that Dr. Curt Connors would be appearing in the film, speculation was that his alter-ego The Lizard wouldn’t appear until Spider Man 3. The report comes from a French magazine interview with Steve Johnson who is supervising the transformation effects for the film.
Will Ferrell meets The Woodman
Variety reports that Will Ferrell is replacing Robert Downey Jr. in Woody Allen’s next flick.
ALIEN:THE DIRECTOR’S CUT trailer
Filmforce is hosting an exclusive trailer for the upcoming ALIEN re-release. The new version will contain footage that was cut from the 1979 release including a supposedly horrific sequence that involves Ripley’s discovery of what happened to Captain Dallas and engineer Brett.
UNDERWORLD music video
To get you primed for the September 19th release of UNDERWORLD, Sony has released a music video from the band Finch. The song is pretty sucky, but there is some cool footage from the movie including a glimpse of a werewolf transformation. The song may suck, but the video has heightened my hopes for this movie.

Weekend REPORT :: September 6-7, 2003
Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star opened at first place this weekend. However, the opening was bittersweet. While David Spade may have been top dog this weekend, his film was the lowest grossing #1 film since 2000. Dickie Roberts is estimated to gross a measly $7 million once the weekend is officially over. This means Dickie Roberts only barely beat out Jeepers Creepers 2, which is estimated at $6.7 million for the weekend.
The weekends only other new release was The Order, opening in sixth place with a very disappointing $4.6 million. Have we already put the last nail in the coffin of Heath Ledger’s career? If not, I think we can safely do it now.
Pirates of The Caribbean brought in $5.5 million. This means that Pirates has swashbuckled Matrix:Reloaded out of the #2 spot for top-grossing movies this year.
The rest of the details are all too depressing and boring to detail here.
Maybe everybody was saving their money for the great-looking movies opening next weekend. These include Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Cabin Fever and Matchstick Men. Also indie faves American Splendor and Thirteen will continue to add new venues.

ALIEN quadrilogy
DVD Answers has scored specs on the upcoming ALIEN Quadrilogy boxed DVD set. In addition to featuring all four of the films, with lots of extended footage and way too many special features to list. The set clocks in with a whopping 9 discs. Check out this promo artwork:

FAMILY GUY: The movie
Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane recently told Cinescape that his television series will be getting new life as a feature film. “It’s all come down to the budget right now. We’re hashing it out,” said McFarlane. “It would be a direct-to-DVD project.” With brisk DVD sales and good ratings on The Cartoon Network, THE FAMILY GUY is more popular now than it was when it was airing new episodes on Fox. Expect the feature in 12 to 18 months.

Victor Salva:BODY SNATCHER
Victor Salva has confirmed his involvement in the remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. “I think it’s just one of the best ideas that any writer has ever come up with and that’s why it translates so well in each incarnation,” Salva told the BBC. Before directing SNATCHERS, Salva may direct a ghost story entitled LIGHTHOUSE or THE WATCH, a WW2 horror flick.

Wim Wenders goes digital
Art-house fave Wim Wenders is preparing a digital project to be produced by IFC’s InDigEnt. Script is by Wenders and Michael Meredith, based on a story by Wenders. IFC is co-financing the project with Wenders and German-based Reverse Angle International.
Caleb Carr talks EXORCIST
Horror Express has scored an interview with novelist and screenwriter Caleb Carr regarding all of the controvery surrounding EXORCIST:THE BEGINNING. Carr doesn’t pull any punches. It will be interesting to see if this film is as bad as Carr thinks it is, and whether Morgan Creek can salvage it.
THE FLY gets re-made… again!
Variety reports that Fox Searchlight will be producing a re-make of THE FLY helmed by commercial director Todd Lincoln. This will be Lincoln’s feature directorial debut. One of the elements that Lincold is reportedly adding to the script is the ability of the Fly to actually… fly! THE FLY joins the ranks of a slew of upcoming horror re-makes including DAWN OF THE DEAD, SUSPIRIA and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.
THE RING comes to comics.
Dark Horse Comics will be bringing THE RING to U.S. comic book shelves. The project will be an English-language edition of the popular Japanese manga by Hiroshi Takahashi & Misao Inagaki. The U.S. version will be presented in the increasingly non-western format, which means you have to read it from back to front. THE RING will be a 304 page softcover graphic novel in the popular 5” x 7” format.

MAN-THING is coming!
Moviehole reports that Brett (LAWNMOWER MAN) Leonard has started filming an adaptation of Marvel Comics’ MAN-THING. The script reportedly has something to do with evil land developers draining the Everglades and some angry indians.
No WOOD for Shyamalan
A Disney spokesman said Wednesday that THE WOODS is just a working title for M. Night Shyamalan’s new feature. There has been some dispute over the title, because director Lucky McKee is also in production on a project entitled THE WOODS. It looks as if McKee’s project gets to keep the name. If anybody hasn’t seen McKee’s previous project MAY, you better get to your video store or better yet, order it today from amazon.com. You won’t be sorry.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO review
“Affectionately conceived, imaginatively staged and highly entertaining...” A positive review of the new Robert Rodriguez flick screened out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival. Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Vincent Cassell Makes TWELVE
French actor Vincent Cassell is the new guy in OCEANS TWELVE. He’s also married to Monica Belluci. ***censored***!
FIREFLY:THE MOVIE?
Universal has given Joss Whedon the go-ahead to begin production on a movie version of his television series FIREFLY. This is despite the fact that the show only aired for five episodes and wasn’t really liked by the few people that saw it. Filming is expected to begin in January. Source: Hollywood Reporter.
