Weekend Report :: November 14 - 16, 2003
1. Elf ($27.2 Million)
2. Master and Commander ($25.7 Million)
3. The Matrix Revolutions ($16.3 Million)
4. Brother Bear ($12.0 Million)
5. Looney Tunes ($9.5 Million)
6. Love Actually ($8.9 Million)
7. Scary Movie 3 ($6.1 Million)
8. Radio ($5.0 Million)
9. Tupac Resurrection ($4.7 Million)
10. Mystic River ($3.3 Million)
Amidst almost universally negative word-of-mouth, Warner Brothers’ much-hyped Matrix Revolutions, took a precipitous 66% nosedive at the box office.
Elf took advantage of its almost universally positive word-of-mouth and nabbed the top slot. This is a mere 12% drop from its opening weekend.
The Russell Crow vehicle Master and Commander surpassed expectations and opened at #2 with $25.7 million. The film is based on Patrick O’Brian’s immensely popular series of novels set during the Napoleanic wars.
The weekends real disappointment was Looney Tunes: Back in Action which earned a measly $9.5 million. The film stars Brendan Fraser, Jenna Elfman, Steve Martin and a bunch of cartoon characters.
Overall box office receipts fell and were almost 25% lower than the same weekend last year when Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets opened.
Next Week: Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat

The newly redesigned Dark Horizons, brings news of the Exorcist 4 reshoots. As we’ve already reported, original director Paul Schrader was fired from the project after delivering his initial cut of the film. Is JINX still jinxed?

TREMORS 4???
Apparently, there is a huge audience for cheesy movies about killer worms. Tremors 4 will hit store shelves on January 2nd. This film is actually a prequel. But don’t worry—Michael Gross (Family Ties,Tremors: The Series) will be playing the great-grandfather of the character he normally plays. To compensate for the lack of anybody who cares this movie, Universal is throwing a copy of the first Tremors in for free. Read the rest...

BIG FISH pics... lots of em!
Sony Pictures seems to be feeling pretty good about Tim Burton’s Big Fish right now. The movie has been pushed back to a Christmas Day released and is already being promoted by the studio as an Oscar contender. So far, everything about it looks great. The following pics are very cool and Sony has launched a brand new website for the film. I’m looking forward to this one.

Groonies? WTF?
Mtv News has released more info on Dick Donner’s proposed Goonies sequel. If you thought this project couldn’t get any more embarrassing, Donner has announced the title is Groonies. That’s right. I’m not kidding. And check out Donner’s explanation for the title:
"The new group is called the Groonies, because they happen to live in a town where [Data], the Chinese kid, lives ... and he’s got an electronics repair shop and all the kids hang out at his shop. He has this Chinese accent and he calls the Goonies the Groonies, and so the new kids call themselves the Groonies, until they get into a situation where the old Goonies have to save the new Groonies, or vice versa."

KILL BILL 2 pics
It’s currently in vogue to bash Kill Bill, but I am totally convinced that we won’t be able to properly assess this movie until we have seen the second part. Sure, it does seem like an idiotic idea to split this into two films. But what’s the point in bitching. Here are our first few glimpses at Kill Bill Volume 2.
