DICK AND JANE back on track

image
Variety reports that the troubled project Fun With Dick and Jane has found a new director. Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) has stepped in to take over for former director Barry Sonnenfeld. Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz will both star. Shooting will not begin until next June when Carrey’s and Diaz’s schedules open up. The film is a remake of a 70’s comedy about a couple who pull heists to pay the bills.

In related news, the obnoxious actress in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation is reportedly based on Cameron Diaz. If so, the actress does a pretty dead-on impression. The two met when Coppola’s estranged husband, Spike Jonze, was filming Being John Malkovich.

On another related note, does anybody remember when Diaz was a lot less annoying and even widely considered to be hot? Now I’d be hard pressed to think of a more annoying celebrity.

Ice Cube replaces Vin Diesel

image One of the more ridiculous stories we’ve been following has been the quest to get the sequel to XXX into production. First the director and creator of the series Rob Cohen dropped out and the search was on for a director. Now it seems the star of the film Vin Diesel has dropped out as well. Filling their shoes for the sequel are Die Another Day director Lee Tamahori and Barbershop star Ice Cube.

In order to keep the franchise going it will be refocused to feature a different agent each film. To make things even more ridiculous, avoid the big James Bond-style action in favor of more psychological thrills.

Are studios really this desperate to keep a franchise going? After all, the first film was a financial disappointment. It was a terrible film. XXX was created as a vehicle for Rob Cohen to direct and Vin Diesel to star as a Gen-X James Bond. So now we have a sequel to a sucky movie with an all-new creative team, a new leading man and a new direction. And I still can’t figure out what is XXX about it.

At least the incessant hyping of Vin Diesel is over for the time being. His only film to really deliver financially was The Fast and the Furious and he was nothing more than a supporting character in that flick. And it seems the title of “The big new action star” has been usurped by The Rock. So what’s next for Vin? Riding elephants in Hannibal and spinning off sequels to Pitch Black, another mediocre movie where he was nothing more than a supporting actor.

LORD OF THE RINGS marathon theaters announced

imageIt was announced last month that New Line would be releasing the extended editions of Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers in theaters to get audiences primed for the final installment Return of the King. To make things even cooler, select theaters will host an Extended Edition Movie Marathon on December 16th. If you are a die-hard fan with hard-core stamina this is probably a dream come true. I can only imagine the Hobbit-stench that will be wafting from those theaters by the time the day is over.

Here is a list of theaters. Tickets go on sale October 9th. Due to the limited number of theaters this thing has a good chance at selling out so get your tickets early. For more information check out the official site.

Tarantino to remake 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN?

image
In an interview with Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily, Quentin Tarantino let slip some interesting tidbits about a potential future project. He is interested in re-making the Shaw Brothers classic kung-fu flick The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Liu Chia-Hui, the star of the original film, plays two different roles in Tarantino’s upcoming Kill Bill .

The paper claims that the Shaw Brothers have asked him to direct the film and he has agreed. Unfortunately, he will not be able to make the film until 2006.

The article also cites a Tarantino interview from a year ago where he mentioned his desire to do a Chinese Kung-fu film. “I have that thought all the time, but not this one (Kill Bill). I think I will make one in the future. Certainly will be shot in China but in American way and with Chinese American as the leads. That’s because it‚s impossible to blend Hong Kong actors and (mainland) Chinese actors into the whole movie. Chinese Americans are still Americans. By this way, all characters will speak the same language with the same accent. I want to shoot something of my own.”
Thanks to Shogo for the tip.

DAWN OF THE DEAD remake poster

According to Shogo, the official Cinema Eye translator, the tagline reads: “Fear the one you love.” Japanese posters are pretty much always cool and this one is no different. It is giving me a little bit of optimism about this flick. We’ll see.
