Ed's Movie News Roundup
Intro.
I will be the first to admit it. I loved “The Chronicles of Riddick”. I don’t know why all you pussies are ashamed to admit what a great film this truly is. Have all you sci-fi fans been so castrated by ANDROMEDA re-runs that you can’t enjoy a good testosterone packed futuristic flick?
The film has a few flaws and, sure, Vin Diesel isn’t the greatest elocutor of our time, but the guy can deliver the action goods. On top of the great action sequences, writer/director David Twohy delivers an engaging script and an interesting futuristic backdrop. No time for a full review right now. But in a Wolverine vs. Riddick fight… my money would be on Riddick.
Now… on to the news…
NEWS ROUNDUP
• "28 Weeks Later” cash-in is in the works.
Fox Searchlight is producing a sequel to the Danny Boyle-directed horror movie “28 Days Later.” Boyle and screnwriter Alex Garland will likely serve as producers. Rowan Joffe is the leading contender to write the script. I loved “28 Days Later” but this reeks of a cash-in to me. Leave it alone and come up with something original. How about a re-make of “Return of the Living Dead 3”?
• Jim Cameron drops hints
Jim Cameron’s upcoming $200 million 3-D movie seems to be coming together nicely. Cameron announced that Brian Cox is likely to play the lead and that Cameron is looking at certain action heroes of the 1980’s to round out the cast. Hmm. Van Damme? Seagal? Dolph? This is sounding pretty exciting. Nothing much is known about the film, but inside sources say it may center on man’s first trip to Mars.
• BATMAN BEGINS trailer description
Batman on Film has somehow snagged a description of the upcoming BATMAN BEGINS teaser trailer. Supposedly, their anonymous source is very reliable. Apparently Warner Brothers is trying to rush production on this trailer so that they can attach it to SPIDER-MAN 2. Here’s a taste:
There is some voice-overs of different people, mainly Neeson. There are flashes of the rest of the cast, Bale talking about his fears, what drives him. Then We see a man slip on a strange looking gas mask. Very German/Nazi WW2 looking for the design of the mask. Probably the Scarecrow. A black screen, Batman standing on top of a building then jumping falling down towards the screen. Flashes of a fast moving train, What looks like a huge black tank and a helicopter and police cars. A few more flashes of some fast paced car action.
There are a few shots of the city (Which look very dark and pretty rough, Very unfinished). Then Bale’s eyes appear over the skyline, Which fades into Bale’s face in the Batman mask.
Then a black screen and the new bat logo fades in, kinda old school with a rusted finish. It slowly moves towards the screen with a bass dropping drone. The credits fade in “Next Summer it Begins."
• You may have already seen this, but is this cool or what?
• You may have already seen this, but is this LAME or what?
Okay, that wraps it up for this week. See you next Monday!
And don’t forget to stop by the Cinema Eye message boards.

NEWS
• Remember BMW films? Now Toyota Japan presents IST CFILMS. It is a series of short films starring Japan’s most demanded actors (Asano Tadanobu of Kitano’s Zatoichi). The eries contains 7 films (5 films, with prologue and epilogue) and can be viewed at www.ist-ist.com until July 30th.

• Breaking News is a new film by director Johnnie (PTU, Turn Left Turn Right). The film is about hostage situation and media manipulation. After losing credibility of the police force by TV live broadcast of bank robbery showdown, inspectors decide to turn the stakeout into breaking news show to beat the media at its own game. Warner Bros. has acquired remake rights and expectedly hits big screens next year.
• Jiang Hu starring Andy Lau (INFERNAL AFFAIRS trilogy) and Edison Chen (TWINS EFFECT) is the new triad film from Hong Kong. Word is that it has been severely chopped off to make through the rating system in HK, What has been cut out? Notably a scene that Edison Chen screwing a puppy!
• According to Fangoria, Walter Salles’ remake of Nakata Hideo’s DARK WATER will be released theatrically on October 15th. That is just two weeks prior to Sam Raimi’s Ghost House release of THE GRUDGE (a remake of JU-ON). DARK WATER stars Jennifer Connelly, Shelley DuVall, John C. Reilly, Ariel Gade and Tim Roth. Read my review of the original DARK WATER here.
• MiramAxe has removed INFERNAL AFFAIRS from a September release. Who could have guessed that a respectable studio like MiramAxe would do something like that.
• New York-based Magnolia Pictures has acquired Thai actioner ONG BAK and plans to release it in the US this November. The film follows a statue in a temple in Thailand that is believed to be imbued with mystical powers. When it is stolen, Jaa heads to Bangkok’s underground fight clubs to win it back.
• According to Fred Topel from about.com, apparently Jackie Chan said he is not going to sell his NEW POLICE STORY to any US distributor, because, he fears that it would not be treated properly. Of course he is talking about MiramAxe here. But Jackie, I bet Sony Picture Classics will treat it right. We, people in the US, would love to see it!
REVIEW
Sorry guys, I didn’t have time to view films this week. I will have some next week.
EVERYTHING ELSE
Everyone Wants To Be Like George
Last week, I purchased the Anniversary Edition of FIELD OF DREAMS on DVD. This film is certainly one of my favorite films of all time and I was truly glad to have it with a new anamorphic transfer and finally DTS sound. I was there with Chris when I bought it and he asked me how many different versions and different formats of FIELD OF DREAMS I have in my collection. I have every single version ever put out as home entertainment of this film. Now I started to think about why every studio is pulling a George (Lucas) on us. If the new format or platform introduced improves the home viewing experience, I am, without argument, up for it. But if they do multiple release of recent films every 6 months with a few minor changes, I am against it (even though I might buy it).
Multi version releases of the same films are nothing new to us. We have all seen studios releasing a particular movie repeatedly. Most commonly, STAR WARS. We all surely have multiple copies of the Trilogy on VHS and/or laserdisc. I myself have two different sets of VHS and three different sets of laserdiscs. Sometimes just the packaging was changed, yet more often than not, some supplements were added (like a new ten minute interview with cast and crew) or the film was simply “digitally remastered”.
If your memory serves you correctly, studios have been doing this for decades starting with the laserdisc. Releasing a basic movie-only disc first, then a few years later releasing a Deluxe Special Collectors Edition. True geeks (or I should say suckers) obviously purchased both (I did). It was to be expected that this method would be transferred over to the DVD. Sure it did.
DVD was introduced almost seven years ago. Now for those movies that were released in the early days of DVD, which were suffered from sufficient technical aspect, it is time to revisit them and do the justice that film deserves. I can dig it. So can you. Every studio is doing it. This won’t go away. We, film geeks, should be true believers that this is a good thing. Because we want the best possible way to watch the great films we all adore, right?
Now this is why I have major problems with studios releasing multiple versions. The Limited, let me repeat it again, Limited Edition. I know you all know exactly what I am talking about. I am sure titles like, ARMY OF DARKNESS, HALLOWEEN, T2 and MANHUNTER pop right into your brain. What is the meaning of Limited Edition? It’s a marketing word for suckers so they will jet to Best Buy the day it comes out and purchase it thinking they have one of only 3000 copies available. I can boldly say this because like I stated earlier, I am one of those suckers. Anchor Bay has been the worst in this trend. Their arrogance has annoyed us for years now with their re-releasing of the same movies (most of titles I mentioned above are from them). I just saw a new re-release of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN on a store shelf the other day. The previous “limited edition” was there on the same shelf just a few days ago. That previous disc has been labeled as a “limited edition” ever since it came out in 1999. I guess it is a true “limited edition” now because it is replaced by new “limited edition”. What the hell is that about, DreamWorks? I know Disney will be doing that with their animated movies but since I don’t buy them, it’s not worth mentioning here.
Here is another major problem. This is killing us all. Studios are now cashing in with sequel theatrical releases. FAST AND FURIOUS TRICKED OUT EDITION, BOURNE IDENTITY EXPLOSIVE EDITION, CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: PITCH BLACK and so on. This trend on releasing recent blockbusters on DVD and reissue the same films 6 months later is the most ridiculous marketing that studios have ever pulled on us. Lately it’s not even that far apart. For example: UNDERWORLD. They announced a 2 disc set release of the film on DVD within a week of the first special edition DVD release. And I can assure you that when the sequel hits theaters, they will release another version. The same goes with the SPIDEY DVDs. What about MiramAxe’s plans for the KILL BILL DVD. I am sure you have all read that, so I will not state their corrupted plan that they publicly announced.
How do we decide whether or not to buy the current release for whatever the movie on DVD, or wait for the next version that you know eventually comes out? It is obvious that the next version will be better in many ways. You know the answer in your heart. That’s right. You just don’t want to admit it. I will say it here on behalf of all of us. Buy every single version because you just can’t help it. We all know we will buy when they label it SPECIAL EDITION, LIMITED EDITION, COLLECTOR’S EDITION, ULTIMATE EDITION…etc. Just like the STAR WARS copies that all of us have in our collections; we’re bound to have multi copies of certain movies on DVD. And that is a ***censored*** cool thing.
Maybe George didn’t start this annoying thing. STAR WARS is perhaps the victim of this trend. People ***censored*** about George on this reissuing subject but when he re-releases it; he always gave us something much more with it.

• Evil Awakening To Be Released On DVD
X Posse Productions will be releasing their first film, Evil Awakening, as a full featured DVD, which includes commentary, trailers, and a short film among other extras. The premise of the film focuses on a serial killer named, Kevin Fitzell, who in 1916 within the woods near the town of Ludlow Massachusetts, murders over a hundred people. Soon after a priest, Father Hornelli, escapes his clutches, he is hunted down and is later tortured and murdered by a angry vigilante mob. Soon the woods become cursed by a event that happens the next day involving Father Hornelli and the Devil, which carries over 80 years and then into present day. For more a trailer and for more details visit the film’s website at www.xposse.com/ea/index.php
• Wolves Arise During the Release of The Lunar Pack
Hocus Focus Productions has been gearing up to make its next feature film for some time now. In preparation for OPERATION:WOLF SPAWN, which is currently in development, the independent video production company has begun production of three short werewolf movies. The three will be presented in one DVD collection, THE LUNAR PACK. Each short movie is an experiment in make-up F/X and camera and editing techniques. This means that although the films share one writer and director, they will each have their own signature looks and bring a different twist to the werewolf genre.
DARK ROSE: 700 YEAR ITCH and SHEEP’S CLOTHING are already in the can (or small plastic case since these were both produced on digital video) and CRYING WOLF, is now in preproduction, with principal photography scheduled for this summer. CRYING WOLF is slated to be shot on a 24fps miniDV camera for a more cinematic look, setting it apart from the other two shorts in the collection. Award winning director, Jason L. Liquori, has written all three screenplays and is even featured in one of the movies. “I was the only one who work twelve hours straight for free,” he quips. Liquori explains that all of his cast and crew members actually go well beyond the norm to help tell the tales (or should we say tails) of these most unusual werewolves.
Rice Power Productions Completes “Dead Meat"
Rice Power Productions, the filmmakers behind The Night Owl, have completed production on their newest horror film, Dead Meat. The premise of the film follows a group of four cheerleaders who find themselves stranded on their way to a regional championships soon finding themselves a refuge in a abandoned lodge hidden in a backwoods area of Florida. Once there, they become hostages when a duo of escaped convicts decide to hide out at the same building and a tense stand-off between the convicts and the local deputies ensue. However, amidst everyone’s troubles, when the night falls a new terror arises in the form of a local legend, Andre The Butcher, played by porn star, Ron Jeremy. An expected release date of winter 2004 is planned. To see the trailer to the film or for more details visit www.deadmeatmovie.com

Hitch Daily | Celebrate National Mourning Day
IT’S MOURNING IN AMERICA
Greetings on this National Day of Mourning. Yes, that’s right, the premiere date of GARFIELD: THE MOVIE. We hang our heads low. My wife took our daughter to last night’s screening of it. My daughter proclaimed she loved every part and wants to see it again; my wife dubbed it boring and plotless.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT...
This weekend, throw on THE BLUES BROTHERS, in honor of Ray Charles. Or, barring that, watch some Pizza Hut commercials.
SHELF, OFF THE
In prep for the movie (thought I don’t know why, as it looks like it has nothing to do with the book) I read Issac Asimov’s 1950 classic I, ROBOT, which is a novel disguised as a short story collection. Set in the near-future, it tells of a time where robots are babysitters, miners and—in the book’s best chapter—even politicians. Told chronologically, it takes place over several decades, so you see the shift of public opinion from treating robots as slaves to viewing them as a threat. I enjoyed it, though Asimov’s prose can get dry at times. If you get the new hardback edition like I did, you’re spared a cover image of Will Smith.

MP-FREE!
For years I’ve had this anonymous CD called STAR WARS BREAKBEATS, which is exactly what it sounds like—electronic breakbeat tracks with judicious dialogue and SFX samples from STAR WARS to the point where you know the Lucasfilm legal department was just foaming at the mouth. Anyway, long story short, I unloaded the disc on eBay this month to help the ol’ cashflow, but no before saving a couple of choice tracks in MP3 format. I’ve posted the first one, titled “I’ve Got a Bad Feeling About This,” at:

AROUND THE WORLD ... IN 5 DAYS
I was wrong. The AROUND THE WORLD remake opens not today, but next Wednesday, so you’ll have to wait for my review then. I’m taking a couple of vacation days until then anyway, so I leave you with Filler-Inner Brian Winkeler.
