2046 almost finished
Variety, of all places, reported today on the status of the new Wong Kar-wai project 2046. The film has been in production for four years and is a sequel to his amazing film In the Mood for Love. Once shooting is completed, there will be a lot of visual effects added in post-production, so a release date hasn’t yet been announced.
“We should have finished production by the end of December,” Wong told Variety. “There are three more weeks to do in Shanghai and then about four in Hong Kong. But we will be doing a lot of visual effects in post, so the exact release date is hard to say.”
2046 follows the novelist character from In the Mood For Love. 2046 is the title of a science fiction novel that he is writing that will be brought to live as a movie within a movie, hence the need for lots of special effects.

Weekend Report :: November 7-9
1. Matrix Revolutions (50.2 Million)
2. Elf ($32.1 Million)
3. Brother Bear ($18.6 Million)
4. Scary Movie ($11.1 Million)
5. Radio ($7.4 Million)
6. Love Actually ($6.6 Million)
7. Mystic River ($4.8 Million)
8. Texas Chainsaw Massacre ($4.8 Million)
9. Runaway Jury ($4.8 Million)
10. School of Rock ($3.2 Million)
Box office reports this week are all quick to point out Matrix‘s failure to meet the expectations set for it by it’s predecessors. Revolutions was expected to opn 40% higher than it actually did. It’s domestic weekend was a mere $50.16 million, compared to Reloaded‘s $91.8 million. The Warner Brothers P.R. department is going into spin control overdrive, trumpeting it’s worldwide grosses for the week. The film brought in $204.1 million globally which beats the previous record set by The Two Towers.
Any way you slice it, it’s obvious that the interest in this franchise is fading fast. Although overall audience reaction seems to be that this film is better than Reloaded, it’s still pretty clear that everybody feels that these last two movies should have been a lot better.
Will Ferrell’s Elf capitalized on the Matrix backlash, gracefully slipping into 2nd place with a very healthy $32.1 million. Critical and audience reaction to this film is off the charts, so expect it to hang around for awhile.
Love Actually opened in 6th place. This weekend was a limited release for the film and it should climb the charts a bit once it goes wide.

News on THE WOODS
If you happened to see a little indie flicked entitled May, you will know the name Lucky McKee. May was his directorial debut and it quickly became a cult favorite after being quietly released on video. Now McKee is directing his first studio film, entitled The Woods.
This is a preview image recently featured in Entertainment Weekly:
Set in 1965, The Woods is set in an all-girls private school and concerns mysterious occurrences in the woods surrounding the school. The film stars Agnes Bruckner, Patricial Clarkson and BRUCE CAMPBELL!
Bruce Campbell posted this information on http://www.bruce-campbell.comhis official site[/url]:
“I play Joe Fasulo, a semi-nerd father of the lead girl. Think the original The Haunting, set in 1965. It’s directed by a new filmmaker named Lucky McKee - he did a cool little indie called “May” that made some noise a year ago. This is his first studio movie.”
We’ll keep you up to date on the progress of The Woods. In the meantime, buy or rent May.

Rent it on-line at Netflix!

The Future of STAR WARS
Rumors have been circulating like wildfire around the recent Lucasfilm Star Wars summit. We told you about it here. Now, supposedly, a spy for Ain’t It Cool News has attended the summit and leaked the following information.
According to the spy, the Star Wars timeline will be as follows:
Now: The Clone Wars animated series on Cartoon Network
September 2004: Original trilogy released on DVD
January 2005: Episode III teaser advertising begins.
May 2005: Episode III in theaters.
November 2005: Episode III DVD
2006: Two television ideas are being considered, one live-action, one animated.
The spy also supposedly saw some Episode III footage: “Some cool as hell stuff. Anakin is looking darker than ever. Dark clothes, with what appears to be some scars on his face. They showed one scene with Obi-Wan, The Emperor and Anakin crashing their ship into a planet as the ship burns. They showed some animation of what will be OB1’s transportation at one point in the film. A large lizard that’s able to walk upside down and scale walls. [minor spoilers] Oh - and they showed some green screen footage of the final lightsaber fight between Obi-Won and Anakin… It looked colossal. The lightsaber fight to end all lightsaber fights. Evil wins, we all know that. The intensity with which the two were fighting was phenomenal. Seems the final battle takes place on a lava planet, and at one point the two are hoping back and forth on hovercrafts floating over the lava.”
While the information definitely sounds like it could be accurate, take it all with a grain of salt. Consider the source.
