Finally! DAZED AND CONFUSED: CRITERION COLLECTION
DAZED AND CONFUSED is easily one of my ten favorite movies and I’m sure it had some influence on my recent move to Austin. I was infuriated by the last DVD release which seemed targeted at the lowest common denominator of DVD buyers and I have been holding out hope that Criterion would release a version that would rival their awesome release of Linklater’s SLACKER. Now the Austin American Statesman is reporting that a Criterion edition is indeed on the way.
2003 marked the 10th anniversary of Richard Linklater’s enduringly great DAZED AND CONFUSED, and the film’s hometown - Austin - partied in appropriate manner with a thronged anniversary soiree thrown by the Austin Film Society. Having the cast and producers in town for the bash made it easy to film all the key players in one place, and that’s what AMC did for the new doc MAKING DAZED, premiering at 9 p.m. Sunday on cable channel 63. Shot at Linklater’s bucolic home outside Austin, the fun, illuminating program includes behind-the-scenes footage of a shaggy-haired Linklater at work in 1992 and new interviews with actors whose careers were launched by the movie: Matthew McConaughey, Parker Posey, Ben Affleck and Adam Goldberg. Hear about the passion, the struggles and the ‘70s wigs in this festive slice of Austin movie lore. And keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming deluxe DVD of Dazed and Confused from Criterion

DVD WHORE >> September 13, 2005
It’s Tuesday! That of course means new DVDs. Here are a few of this weeks highlights…
- THE DIRECTOR’S LABEL Volumes 4-7
It’s going to be a very expensive week for me because I have to get all four of these. The first three volumes are easily 3 of my most frequently played DVDs. Each disc comes with a very thick squarebound book of photos and writing about the featured director. If you are a film student and you don’t already have Volumes 1-3, it’s time to start skipping a few meals. If I had to pick just one it would be the Mark Romanek set which has several pieces that I know I will watch over and over. - RUMBLEFISH
This is one of my favorite Coppola films. It kind of got overlooked since it came out in the wake of THE OUTSIDERS, but I actually like this movie a lot more. The cast is spectacular and the black and white cinematography is outstanding. Spielberg got all the credit for black and white with a touch of color in SCHINDLER’S LIST, but Coppola did it here years earlier. I’ve never seen this on anything but VHS, so I am really looking forward to it.
There’s a complete list of todays releases after the jump. If you haven’t been to the store yet, consider using these handy links to add to your collection while helping to support Cinema Eye. Use the comments link to let us know what you bought (or wish you could afford) this week.

According to DVD Answsers the new version will hit the streets on December 13th and retail for a street price of $39.99. This is a two disc set which also comes with the complete SIN CITY graphic novel, THE HARD GOODBYE. The big news is that the set features 2 different cuts of the film: 1. The original theatrical cut and 2. An extended directors cut that is split into four separate stories.

MALLRATS: 10TH Anniversary DVD
MALLRATS, Kevin Smith’s followup to CLERKS, was almost universally reviled when it was theatrically released. Since then, it has attracted a hardcore cult following. So it only makes sense that it would receive a new DVD release to celebrate its 10th Anniversary. I like Kevin Smith’s work, but I wouldn’t consider myself a hardcore fan. However, I really enjoyed the CLERKS X DVD and am looking forward to this one. MALLRATS 10TH ANNIVERSARY hits stores on September 20th.
