David Lynch to re-edit DUNE for directors cut

image

Although he once swore he would never touch the film again, it appears that David Lynch is in the process of re-editing DUNE for the upcoming DVD release. The special edition DVD was supposed to be released on May 10th, but it was recently cancelled with no explanation given. According the thedigitalbits.com, it’s because Lynch decided at the last minute he wanted to do an actual directors cut.

...after years of saying he would never revisit Dune, at the 11th hour director David Lynch decided that he wanted to be involved in the new DVD after all. Which means that when it’s eventually released, not only is the DVD going to include the original theatrical version of the film… it will include a brand new “director’s extended cut” edited by Lynch himself! No kidding.

Ben Affleck's ELEKTRA cameo

As if ELEKTRA wasn’t bad enough… it turns out there really was a cameo appearance by Ben Affleck that was shot for the film but left on the cutting room floor for various reasons. The cut scene will be included on the upcoming ELEKTRA DVD, but you can see how bad it is right now, thanks to Rope of Silicon.

While we’re on this tangent, it’s amazing to compare ELEKTRA to SIN CITY. Both are based on comics by Frank Miller. Elektra is typical Hollywood bullshit while SIN CITY is envelope pushing art. Hollywood, take note!

DUNE gets a special edition DVD

Universal Studios is finally giving David Lynch’s DUNE a proper special edition. Since we will never see Lynch’s 5-hour directors cut, this is probably going to be the ultimate edition for quite some time.

I know a lot of people hate DUNE, and maybe as a science fiction movie it isn’t so good, but as a David Lynch movie is is very interesting. The last time I watched it was not too long after STAR WARS EPISODE I for the first time and I was blown away by how amazing the sets were in DUNE compared to that movie. The music and visual style are also very operatic and unique. The movie definitely has it’s flaws, but I’ll look forward to watching this one on a decent DVD.

DETAILS:
2 disc set
Region 1
Original Theatrical Version (137 minutes)
Extended Version (190 minutes)
Metal Snap Case packaging
Release Date: May 10, 2005
Bonus Features to be announced.

It is important to note, that neither one of these versions is the Director’s Cut. Lynch’s cut reportedly is almost five hours long and after the movie was re-edited without his consent, he vowed to never touch the movie again.
