Jon Favreau to direct JOHN CARTER OF MARS

image

The revolving door of directors for JOHN CARTER OF MARS continues to spin. First, I got all excited about Robert Rodriguez, but he left the project due to difficulties with the Director’s Guild. Next up was SKY CAPTAIN director Kerry Conran which seemed like a decent choice although I wasn’t a big SKY CAPTAIN fan. Now the revolving door has spun once more and Jon Favreau (ELF, ZARATHUSTRA) has landed in the director’s chair.

FANTASTIC FEST starts today

image

The first FANTASTIC FEST kicks off today in Austin, Texas. This looks to be the start of a very cool film festival that focuses exclusively on fantasy, sci-fi and horror related films. Over the next few days I will be filing reports about the movies I have seem. A few that I am very much looking forward to: ZARATHUSTRA, FEAST, HOSTEL, WILD BLUE YONDER and A SCANNER DARKLY. Also Robert Rodriguez will be presenting his extended cut of SIN CITY in what may be the extended cuts only theatrical screening. Festival badges and tickets to individual screenings are still available at Fantastic Fest.PS:  If there are any Austin readers attending, e-mail me at christopher [at] cinemaeye.com and maybe we can connect at one of the screenings or after-parties.

Peter Jackson to produce HALO

image

In what seems like a perfect fit, LORD OF THE RINGS masterminds Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh have signed on to develop HALO for Universal and 20th Century Fox. They won’t be directing or writing, but via their Wingnut Films will be providing creative input on all stages of the production. Jackson’s WETA effects companies will provide visual effects for the film. This is the first time Jackson and Walsh have provided these creative services on a film that Jackson isn’t personally directing. As far as I’m concerned it sounds like a good move, expecially if the studios want to ensure this isn’t just another lame videogame movie. However, I’m still waiting to hear news on Wingnut’s live-action version of NEON GENESIS EVANGELION.

Is INDIANA JONES 4 getting underway?

image

This news is the first potential sign that INDIANA JONES 4 is finally getting underway. PRLeap.com is reporting that 19-year old Texas model Laura Dutto has been signed for a female lead in the film. Dutto has been signed for three months of shooting but will take a break to fly to Paris for Fashion Week. We don’t have a picture of Dutto yet, but the exciting news is that this project seems to finally be moving forward.

Kevin Smith leaves FLETCH WON

image

Although he’s talked about the project for years, Kevin Smith is no longer attached to FLETCH WON. “The movie is going to be made, and if all goes as planned should be in production in early ‘06. Second, and correctly, Kevin Smith is no longer affiliated with the Fletch film as writer or director”, said David List, producer of the film.  “His type of comedy just isn’t FLETCH. It’s not that Kevin isn’t talented or funny. It’s just that his comedic style, ultimately, proved to not translate well for FLETCH, at least as I and Harvey felt. Keep an open mind. There’s lot’s of very funny writers out there”.  List say there should be an announcement in the near future about a new writer and director for the film. He also hints that there is a good possibility that Chevy Chase will return to play the lead.
