Scary Movie 3 continued to defy expectations and cling to the top slot at the box office. This brings its cumulative gross to almost $79 million. Disney made the unusual decision of opening Brother Bear on Saturday, to avoid the slow Halloween night at theaters. “Halloween has grown and become such a family experience that we chose not to compete with that on Friday,” said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney. Even with just two days of ticket sales, the critically panned film opened in second place with $18.5 million.
The weekend overall was in a slump due to Halloween, but exas Chainsaw Massacre took advantage of the holiday and held up very well.
Alien: The Directors Cut opened in limited release and grossed an estimated $1.04 million on only 347 screens.
Next Weekend: The weekend starts on Wednesday, with the release of The Matrix Revolutions, then on Friday, Will Ferrell jump starts the holiday season with the eagerly anticipated Elf.
