2006 Baftas

February 20th, 2006 by Chris Blagden

Bafta winner Brokeback Mountain

In the end the 2006 Baftas belonged to the cowboy film ‘Brokeback Mountain’. ‘The Constant Gardener’ lost out despite multiple nominations and four times nominated George Clooney went home with nothing on the night. The weather in London’s Leicester Square was a predicatable wash out; the delightful British weather combination of driving rain and bitter wind; the red carpet was soaked to the core but still the celebrities and celebrity hunters came out in their droves on one of the most important nights of the year for British film.

’Brokeback Mountain’ starring Health Ledger gathered an impressive four awards while ‘Memoirs Of A Geisha’ picked up three Baftas and ‘Crash’ took home another two. With its low budget more than a few executives will have taken note of how smaller productions like ‘Crash’ can just as readily take on the £100 million Hollywood blockbusters. Actress Reese Witherspoon and actor Philip Seymour Hoffman were also honoured for their leading roles in their respective nominated films.
The big question doing the rounds is of course is whether ‘Brokeback Mountain’ will be able to repeat its success at the Oscars in a just a couple of weeks time?
