In the Realm of the Senses

IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES (Japan 1976) ***
Nagisa Oshima’s most controversial film IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES has two showings this week at the Cinematheque Ontario.
(Screenings: Nov 14h and 15th)
Pornography or art? Oshima’s (banned in Ontario) non-conservative tale of two lovers (Eiko Matsuda and Tatsuya Fuji) reveals all – both physically in terms of genitals and love making as well as emotionally in terms or obsession, mayhem and castration. Based on a real incident that took place in 1936 Japan, Oshima’s tale follows a novice Abe Sada turned pro and then sex monster.
The couple discard everything else including the world around them – which in this case happens to be the military battles of 1936. Before long, something has to explode – and Oshima lets the fireworks begin slowly. More shocking than the explicit shots of dick and ***censored*** is the transformation undergone by the couple. Oshima outdoes himself in this one. Obviously, this film is not for all tastes.
