Andrea Arnold was born in Dartford England, April 5th 1961; she is the eldest of four children. Her parents divorced when she was young and she was raised by her mother.
Her family history can be seen as a heavy influence in her work: As the saying goes, “Write what you know.”
Arnold’s career in entertainment began as a performer on television. She had a regular presenting spot on the British cult-classic television show, No. 73 and in the early 80’s she was a free style dancer on the British hit show, Top of the Pops.
By the 1990’s Arnold moved from television to film and from the stage to behind the camera. She moved to Los Angeles with her new born baby in the 90’s to attend the American Film Institute where she began a new career writing and directing film.
In 2003 Arnold wrote her fist hit, Wasp, a 26 minute short that tells the story of a mother unwilling to allow her children to get in the way of rekindling a relationship with her ex-boyfriend. The film won over 20 awards including the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
Arnolds next and first feature length film, Red Road (2006), received great acclaim from critics and went on to received 21 awards and 7 nominations. Her latest work Fist Tank, coming to theatres March 19th.
