ALUCINE TORONTO LATIN FILM AND MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL
NOVEMBER 18 – 21, 2010
OVER 90 LATINO FILMS, VIDEOS AND PROGRAMS BY ACCLAIMED ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
TORONTO, October 26, 2010 – aluCine is launching its eleventh annual festival from November 18 to November 21, 2010 with a series of screenings, touring exhibitions, installations, performances, artist talks, workshops and events. Programming includes, animations, documentaries, shorts and experimental films and videos.
“This year, aluCine is a celebration of change and growth,” said festival director Sinara Rozo. “Last year marked our tenth year anniversary, this milestone provided us with an opportunity to reflect and pay tribute to artists who have really paved the way for Latin artists living in Canada, Latin America, and the Diaspora.”
aluCine kicks off with the North American premiere of Juan Sarmiento’s feature documentary Land Left Behind. The festival will also feature a retrospective on award winning Chilean-born Canadian director Claudia Morgado Escanilla and programming by France’s Videoformes and Germany’s Lakino festival. Other programming highlights at aluCine include the acclaimed animated short Aanaatt by Max Hattler, Covered by award-winning director John Greyson, short fiction film Story of David Leonard Sutton by Alfonzo Díaz, short documentary Nos Quedamos by Armando Capó, and award-winning short experimental film Coagulate by Mihai Grecu.
PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS:
OPENING GALA: NORTH AMERICAN PREMIER
aluCine presents the North American premier of acclaimed filmmaker Juan Sarmiento’s documentary Land Left Behind. The story quietly follows the everyday struggles of Solangel, Ruben and Teodoro as they attempt to build a new life with their families in the densely populated city of Bogotá after being violently forced out of their respective homes in the countryside. Filmmaker Juan Sarmiento will be in attendance. November 18 at 7:30 p.m.
CLAUDIA MORGADO ESCANILLA RETROSPECTIVE
Born in Santiago, Chile, Canadian filmmaker Claudia Morgado Escanilla has produced, written and directed eleven short films. Her films have been awarded in international film festivals including the Berlin Teddy in 1996 for her film Unbound. In 2002, she produced and directed Bitten, which garnered three awards at The New York Film and Video Festival 2003. aluCine will be screening Anguish, Bitten, No Bikini and Unbound. Filmmaker Claudia Morgado Escanilla will be in attendance. November 18 at 10 p.m.
PROGRAMMING BY VIDEOFORMES
The shorts selection by Videoformes for aluCine is a state of the art picture of recent experimental works, each of them witnessing a new way to deal with life, either in forms or in topics. Program highlights include Hee Won Navi Lee’s award winning Phone Tapping, Mihai Grecu’s Coagulate and François Vogel’s Stretching. Program includes a live performance by Fluid New Media Lab on November 19 at 9 p.m.
JOURNEY THROUGH LAKINO AMERICA
Lakino offers a small window for the Berlin public to look through and gain an idea of the riches and vitality of Latin-American cinema. Lakino selected five shorts, in the hope that Toronto audiences will be able to appreciate them, as they have. Program highlights include You Don’t Love Me by Martín Piroyanski and Vagonero by Javier Sánchez. Curator Laura Colome Piqueas will be in attendance. Program includes a live performance by Fluid New Media Lab on November 20 at 9 p.m.

aluCine takes place November 18 to November 21, 2010 at Innis Town Hall, Camera Bar and the Polish Combatants Hall. Tickets are available on-site one hour before screenings. Costs: Gala screening $10.00, $8.00 for seniors/students. Performance + evening screenings $8.00, $6.00 for seniors/ students; General Admission $6.00 and $4.00 for seniors/students; festival passes $40.00; and pay-what-you-can events.
