Avary + Ellis = GLAMORAMA!
September 6th, 2005 by Cinema Eye
Okay, I have a couple of confessions to make before getting to the meat of this post. First, I am a big fan of the writer Brett Easton Ellis. I know this is totally uncool, but I am not ashamed to admit that LESS THAN ZERO was a book that totally screwed me up in my formative years and remains an important influence to this day. Secondly, I am a big fan of Roger Avary. I know that this is also uncool. But I like KILLING ZOE and I love RULES OF ATTRACTION - which was adapted from Ellis’ book. Avary has wanted to adapt Ellis’ GLAMORAMA for years now, so I was glad to find this bit of news while surfing over at Suicide Girls. (Dude, I only go there for the interviews.)
SUICIDE GIRLS: Is Roger Avary still doing the Glamorama movie?
ELLIS: He has the rights now for the rest of his and my life. So it’s up to Roger. Roger made a bunch of money from this BEOWULF script that he sold and with that money he came to me and just made me an offer I could not refuse. Since I loved RULES OF ATTRACTION I said great. He’s written a real spellbinding script for GLAMORAMA. I think the problem is that it’s an expensive movie to make and I think it’s topic, which is Americans committing terrorism abroad, makes it not a very popular movie in development right now. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Roger keeps saying he’s going to do it. He keeps showing me storyboards for some of the big set pieces.
This is very cool news. In other Avary news, his long-running and very popular on-line journal and website has disappeared. It was off-line for several days before it was replaced by a mysterious page with contact information for Roger Avary Filmproduktion. Apparently, Avary has set up office in Germany.
