Baz's ALEXANDER still on
July 13th, 2004 by Cinema EyeJust yesterday, news began tocirculate that Bax Luhrmann had shelved plans to make a big budget historical epic focusing on ALEXANDER THE GREAT. The news seemed official and even cited a disappointed Nicole Kidman apparently upset that she wouldn’t get a chance to play Alexander’s mother Olympia.
But less that 24 hours after that initial report, Baz’s reps have been quick to discredit it, claiming the project is still on.
Baz’s Australian representative Maria Farmer told E! Online: “Baz is currently in Europe working on the final draft of his script for ALEXANDER THE GREAT. When he completes that draft he will decide whether ALX is the next film on his slate. We do not know where these reports have originated from. They certainly did not come from Baz.”
It’s important to remember that a lot of work has been don on his film already, including location scouting, background plates for CGI shots and a promo reel for Cannes starring Leonardo DiCaprio in full gladiator gear.
Complicating the project is the fact that Oliver Stone has already almost completed his cinematic version of the Alexander story. His film hits theaters on November 5th and stars Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins and Val Kilmer.
