Canada's Top 10 Films for 2007

Toronto – The Toronto International Film Festival Group (TIFFG) announced the top ten Canadian feature films, and for the first time, the top short films of 2007 at the annual Canada’s Top Ten industry event, hosted by actors Wendy Crewson and Luke Kirby. Public screenings with introductions and Q&As by filmmakers and panel discussions will be held from January 25 to February 5 at Cinematheque Ontario in Toronto.  Tickets go on sale December 12 on the website at topten.ca, by phone at 416-968-FILM, and at the Box Office, Manulife Centre, 55 Bloor Street West (main floor, north entrance). A selection of the films also screen in Vancouver, Ottawa and select Film Circuit communities.  Canada’s Top Ten features are chosen by two national panels of filmmakers, journalists, programmers, and industry professionals. 

"By expanding Canada’s Top Ten to include short films, we’re recognizing the immense range and talent demonstrated by filmmakers from across the country,” said Piers Handling, Director and CEO, Toronto International Film Festival Group.  “Both the Top Ten features and shorts demonstrate the exceptional vitality and the cinematic achievements of our industry.”

All films screen with introductions and Q&As by filmmakers when available.  Three panel discussions are also featured.  Screenings and panel discussions take place at Cinematheque Ontario (Art Gallery of Ontario’s Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas Street West).

Directors Bruce McDonald (THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS) and Cam Christiansen (I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE) and their music supervisors discuss the use of music in their films such as how pieces are chosen, how they’re researched and the ones that get away. Featuring special guests from Canada’s independent music scene.

First Features: Shooting from the Hip

Saturday February 2 – 7:30 pm

Canada’s Top Ten filmmakers Richie Mehta (AMAL), Stéphane Lafleur (CONTINENTAL, UN FILM SANS FUSIL) and Martin Gero (YOUNG PEOPLE ***censored***) discuss their experiences making their debut features, sharing insight about taking their first major film projects from conception to production to screening. Moderated by EYE WEEKLY film critic Adam Nayman. 

The Producer as Auteur: Robert Lantos in Conversation

Tuesday, February 5 – 7:30pm

Robert Lantos, one of Canada’s most illustrious filmmakers and the producer of two of this year’s Canada’s Top Ten films, EASTERN PROMISES and FUGITIVE PIECES, discusses his career and his approach to producing films.

Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo – Canadian short film programmer, Toronto International Film Festival Group

Established in 2001 by the Toronto International Film Festival Group, Canada’s Top Ten is an annual event devoted to celebrating and raising awareness of Canadian cinema.  The Top Ten films are chosen from features, shorts, documentaries, animation, and experimental films.  Each film must have either premiered at a major Canadian film festival or obtained a commercial theatrical release in Canada in 2007.
