Crash Oscar Upset
March 6th, 2006 by Chris Blagden
We talked of possible Oscar upsets just yesterday and so it was that the movie ’Crash‘ became the surprise winner at the 78th Academy Awards, winning best film ahead of clear favourite ’Brokeback Mountain’.
Film producer Cathy Schulman paid tribute to fellow Oscar nominees for delivering “one of the most breathtaking and stunning maverick years in American cinema.”
Ang Lee also won best director for ‘Brokeback Mountain’ but again surprisingly the film won only three of the eight awards it was nominated for. ‘Brokeback Mountain’ until the Oscars had performed much more strongly at recent film awards, which was partly why the film was expected to do so well at this years Academy Awards.
Actress ‘Reese Witherspoon’ and ‘Philip Seymour Hoffman’ both shared lead acting honours for their respective roles in ‘Walk the Line’ and ‘Capote.’

Ceremony was short and sharp and I found one of the most boring of recent years. Host Jon was too nervous at the start and it showed with his comments like “I’m a loser” after a few jokes he made created no response. Watching screen legend Lauren Bacall delivering her text was also too brutal to take.
