February 18, 2011 (Toronto) – Robert Pattinson, Academy Award® winner Juliette Binoche, Academy Award® nominee Paul Giamatti, and Mathieu Amalric are confirmed to star in Cosmopolis, a thriller written by David Cronenberg who will also direct the project. The script is based on the novella of the same name by award-winning writer Don DeLillo.
The producers are Paulo Branco through Paris-based Alfama Films Production and Martin Katz of Toronto-based Prospero Pictures making it Canadian-France co-production.
Cosmopolis is a contemporary thriller about a hedge fund trader who is stalked while his fortune evaporates under the weight of his cynical bets against the survival of the global economy.
Grégoire Melin’s Paris-based Kinology will handle International Sales; Entertainment One will handle distribution in Canada while RAI Cinema SpA will distribute in Italy.
Prospero Pictures is an independent production and finance company specializing in international co-productions founded by Martin Katz. Katz has worked with a number of the industry’s most-respected directors, including Richard Attenborough, Michael Winterbottom and Terry George. George’s film Hotel Rwanda was received to wide critical acclaim and was nominated for three Oscars and three Golden Globes, and won the Humanitas Prize and the TIFF, LA and Berlin Festivals’ People’s Choice Awards. Cosmopolis is the third collaboration between Katz and Cronenberg, after the multi-award-winning Spider and the soon-to-be released A Dangerous Method.
Alfama Films, created in 2006 by award-winning producer Paulo Branco, is an independent production company committed to developing international co-productions, as well as continuing Branco’s long-standing relationships with some of the world’s most innovative directors, including Raoul Ruiz, Laurence Ferreira Barbosa, Christophe Honoré and Werner Schroeter.
More cast announcements to come shortly.
