DECEMBER’S DOC SOUP BRINGS TORONTO PREMIERE OF
GRANITO: HOW TO NAIL A DICTATOR
FILMMAKER PAMELA YATES IN ATTENDANCE
Toronto, November 10, 2011 – Hot Docs is pleased to announce that December’s Doc Soup will screen the Toronto premiere of GRANITO: HOW TO NAIL A DICTATOR (D: Pamela Yates, USA, 103 minutes). Called “both a humanitarian legal thriller and a quest to find justice through cinema” by The Village Voice, GRANITO: HOW TO NAIL A DICTATOR will screen on Wednesday, December 7, at 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Advance tickets are now available for purchase online at http://www.hotdocs.ca. Filmmaker Pamela Yates will be in attendance to introduce the film and answer questions following the screenings.
In 1982, Pamela Yates made the Sundance Award-winning WHEN THE MOUNTAINS TREMBLE, recording the devastating conflict between the Mayan peasants and the Guatemalan military. Following the release of the film, Yates was approached by a lawyer who wondered if her outtakes might legally incriminate the military leaders responsible for the deaths and disappearances of over 200,000 Mayans. In answer to this question, Yates reviewed the footage she had shot and emerged with the idea for a new film. Part political thriller, part memoir, GRANITO: HOW TO NAIL A DICTATOR interweaves a riveting and haunting tale of genocide with the story of eight present-day characters, each adding their “granito” (tiny grain of sand) to the epic quest to bring a malevolent dictator to justice.
The Doc Soup monthly screening series brings the latest Canadian and international documentaries to the big screen in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Select subscription packages for Toronto’s Doc Soup are still available for purchase. Single tickets for GRANITO: HOW TO NAIL A DICTATOR are $14 and can be purchased in advance at http://www.hotdocs.ca or at the door on the night of the screening (subject to availability). A limited number of free tickets for the 9:15 p.m. screening will be available to students with proper ID (subject to availability) at the door, on a first-come first-served basis beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Upcoming screening dates for Toronto’s Doc Soup are January 4, February 9, March 7 and April 4. Doc Soup titles are announced at least one month prior to their screenings and, whenever possible, guest directors are in attendance.
