Docs Soup on Nov 15th

Toronto, November 1, 2010 – Hot Docs is pleased to announce that the November installment of the Doc Soup monthly screening series will feature the Canadian premiere of LENNONYC (D: Michael Epstein, USA, 112 minutes), a highly anticipated documentary offering an intimate look at the time John Lennon, Yoko Ono and their son, Sean, spent living in New York City during the 1970s. 

Called a “gentle crowd-pleaser” and “essential to Beatles fans” by Screen Daily, LENNONYC will screen on Wednesday, November 3, at 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. at the Bloor Cinema, 506 Bloor Street West.

As the world remembers Lennon in what would have been his 70th year, and fans and loved ones prepare for the upcoming 30th anniversary of his tragic death, LENNONYC takes a look back at the final years of one of popular music’s most iconic figures. Making use of never-before-heard studio recordings from the Double Fantasy sessions, the film features previously unreleased outtakes from Lennon in concert, as well as home movies only recently transferred to video. Strewn with exclusive interviews with Ono - who cooperated extensively with the production and offers an unprecedented level of access - and with artists who worked closely with Lennon during this period (including Elton John and photographer Bob Gruen), LENNONYC paints a revealing portrait of the legend’s momentous time in Manhattan, the final years of an extraordinary life cut remarkably short.

The Doc Soup monthly screening series brings the latest Canadian and international documentaries to the big screen in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Select subscription packages for Toronto’s Doc Soup are still available for purchase. Single tickets for LENNONYC are $12 and can be purchased in advance at http://www.hotdocs.ca or at the door on the night of the screening (subject to availability). A limited number of free tickets for the 9:15 p.m. screening will be available to students with proper ID (subject to availability) at the door, on a first-come first-served basis beginning at 5:30 p.m. 

Upcoming screening dates for Toronto’s Doc Soup are December 1, January 5, February 2, March 2 and April 6. Doc Soup titles are announced at least one month prior to their screenings and, whenever possible, guest directors are in attendance.
