DONNIE DARKO returns to theaters

DONNIE DARKO was a film festival hit and box-office failure when it was first released in 2001. But once it hit video, the film became a cult-hit earning over $10 million on DVD alone. It has even enjoyed a very successful run on the midnight film circuit. The film is STILL running at New York’s Pioneer Theater.

Now Newmarket Films is giving the film a second chance at theatrical glory by releasing an extended Director’s Cut of the film. The new edition will run approximately 20 minutes longer. 

Director Richard Kelly: “I am incredibly grateful to Newmarket for this opportunity to re-release DONNIE DARKO. Even though I am proud of the theatrical version of the film, I’ve always felt that the story was somewhat compromised in order to come in under two hours. With this version I feel like I’ve finally been able to complete the film. There is a lot of new content that has never been seen before.”

Newmarket president Bob Berney: “At minimum it will have a whole new midnight circuit. And at best it might have a wider teen audience—we could go pretty wide.”
