Ed's Movie News Roundup

June 21st, 2004 by Cinema Eye

Intro.
I will be the first to admit it. I loved “The Chronicles of Riddick”. I don’t know why all you pussies are ashamed to admit what a great film this truly is. Have all you sci-fi fans been so castrated by ANDROMEDA re-runs that you can’t enjoy a good testosterone packed futuristic flick?

The film has a few flaws and, sure, Vin Diesel isn’t the greatest elocutor of our time, but the guy can deliver the action goods. On top of the great action sequences, writer/director David Twohy delivers an engaging script and an interesting futuristic backdrop. No time for a full review right now. But in a Wolverine vs. Riddick fight… my money would be on Riddick.

Now… on to the news…

NEWS ROUNDUP
• "28 Weeks Later” cash-in is in the works.
Fox Searchlight is producing a sequel to the Danny Boyle-directed horror movie “28 Days Later.” Boyle and screnwriter Alex Garland will likely serve as producers. Rowan Joffe is the leading contender to write the script. I loved “28 Days Later” but this reeks of a cash-in to me. Leave it alone and come up with something original. How about a re-make of “Return of the Living Dead 3”?

• Jim Cameron drops hints
Jim Cameron’s upcoming $200 million 3-D movie seems to be coming together nicely. Cameron announced that Brian Cox is likely to play the lead and that Cameron is looking at certain action heroes of the 1980’s to round out the cast. Hmm. Van Damme? Seagal? Dolph? This is sounding pretty exciting. Nothing much is known about the film, but inside sources say it may center on man’s first trip to Mars.

• BATMAN BEGINS trailer description
Batman on Film has somehow snagged a description of the upcoming BATMAN BEGINS teaser trailer. Supposedly, their anonymous source is very reliable. Apparently Warner Brothers is trying to rush production on this trailer so that they can attach it to SPIDER-MAN 2. Here’s a taste:
There is some voice-overs of different people, mainly Neeson. There are flashes of the rest of the cast, Bale talking about his fears, what drives him. Then We see a man slip on a strange looking gas mask. Very German/Nazi WW2 looking for the design of the mask. Probably the Scarecrow. A black screen, Batman standing on top of a building then jumping falling down towards the screen. Flashes of a fast moving train, What looks like a huge black tank and a helicopter and police cars. A few more flashes of some fast paced car action.

There are a few shots of the city (Which look very dark and pretty rough, Very unfinished). Then Bale’s eyes appear over the skyline, Which fades into Bale’s face in the Batman mask.

Then a black screen and the new bat logo fades in, kinda old school with a rusted finish. It slowly moves towards the screen with a bass dropping drone. The credits fade in “Next Summer it Begins."

Ed's Movie News Roundup

June 7th, 2004 by Cinema Eye

Ed Donovan here. Now that Shogo is getting laid on a regular basis and Chris is trying to direct a movie, the updates around here have been sporadic to say the least. Since I love this site as much as I do, I’ll be filling in every Monday for the Cinema Eye regulars. My column will collect all the little news tidbits that our regulars were too lazy to mention or too incompetent to find out about.

Intro.
I guess a little introduction is in order. I live in Burbank, California and work as a drone for a certain chain of stores that specializes in overpriced photocopies. While it is true that working for a copy shot is definitely beneath my abilities, I prefer to funnel my creativity and energy into creative projects such as this column and my upcoming movie zine CINEMA BIZARRO. I also play drums in the art-rock band SODOM AND THE ZSA ZSA GABORRAHS. I have banged 16 chicks over the course of my life. Most of them have been pretty decent looking… a few have been beautiful… and some day I’ll tell you about the chick in high school with the big tits and inverted nipples.

I am serious about movies and I love strange flicks that are way under the Hollywood radar. So you will be hearing about a mix of things in this column. I will also be answering reader e-mail. So send your comments to ed_donovan@cinemaeye.com and you may see your letters here in this column.

Now… on to the news…

NEWS ROUNDUP
• The big news of the week is that David Duchovny announced that "X-Files 2" is a go. In case I haven’t mentioned it before, “X-Files” is one of my all-time favorite television series. I’m even a big fan of the post-Mulder episodes. So I’m definitely looking forward to this.

• Check out the trailer for “Saw”. I’m definitely eager to check this one out.

• Taurus Entertainment has announced that they will be following up their “Day of the Dead” sequel with "Creepshow 3". However, the film will not be based on Stephen King stories this time around. George Romero will not be involved either. I really hate these Taurus guys and totally feel bad about Romero losing control of all his properties.

• Here’s the first photo I’ve seen of Sarah Michelle Gellar in THE GRUDGE. What’s up with that goofy expression? Are they gonna CGI one of those dead babies in the corner there? Hopefully this movie will flop big time so Sarah can start her career in direct-to-video softcore action thrillers while she is still young and nubile.

• Gary Oldman has talked quite a bit about "Batman Begins" while on the “Harry Potter 3” publicity circuit. It all sounds quite promising. “It’s a $200 million art movie, character driven,” said Oldman. “I’m on a roll with good guys now. I’m trying to put those nasty people behind me”. He also confirmed that he will be back as Sirius Black for the next two Harry Potter films. After seeing “Harry Potter 3” this weekend, I feel a lot better about Oldman being cast as Commisioner Gordon. His performance was very warm and fatherly while at the same time quite intense.

"Astro Boy" is coming to the big screen. The film will be directed by Genny Tarkovsky, the creator of “Samurai Jack” and “Dexter’s Laboratory.”

RUMORS
• Steve Buscemi is being considered for The Joker in the sequel to “Batman Begins.” Warner Brothers is apparently so excited about the film that they are fast-tracking the sequel.

• Jake Gyllenhaal is the leading contender for SUPERMAN in the new McG directed flick. But, Warner Brothers is testing the waters. Supposedly even last weeks cover of Entertainment Weekly was designed to show the Super side of the actor. Other contenders for roles in the film: Johnny Depp Jor-El, Topher Grace for Jimmy Olsen and a slew of actresses for Lois Lane (Natalie Portman, Selma Blair, Rose Bryne and now Jessica Biel).

• Uwe Boll ("House of the Dead") is eagerly seeking Keira Knightly, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Natalie Portman or Kristanna Lokken for the lead in his next film “Blood Rayne.” Good luck, Uwe. I’m sure all these actresses know you suck. Kristanna Lokken may be desperate enough for a role in one of your films, but I’ll wager that you can forget the rest.

Okay, that wraps it up for this week. See you next Monday!
