Grindhouse Movies Double Bill

February 14th, 2008 by Gilbert Seah

Weekend Box Office

The Dead Sleep Easy
Directed by Lee Demarbre
Toronto premiere
The Royal – 608 College Street
February 15 + 16

After the popularization of Quentin Tarantino’s THE GRINDHOUSE, Canada’s own director Lee Demarbe (JESUS CHRIST VAMPIRE HUNTER) offers the real thing in the form of low budget, cheesy THE DEAD SLEEP EASY, a violent action flick for a general male audience.

THE DEAD SLEEP EASY trails an ex-wrestler known as The Champ (Thunder Bay, Ontario’s Ian Hodgkinson).  The Champ now works for a mob boss (Dave Courtney complete with Brit accent from THE KRAYS) but he starts to do good when he fights a human smuggling ring.

If you don’t expect much but a nostalgic time watching old cheap films, THE DEAD SLEEP EASY will satisfy to an extent.  The dialogue is garbage, acting over-the-top and material politically incorrect (though not overtly offensive).  The film boasts the music by Michael Dubue, front man of the experimental band, The Hilotrons.  But don’t expect too much.

THE DEAD SLEEP EASY was reportedly made on a shoe string budget (of pesos).  Filmed in English and Mexican Spanish, Demarbe’s film is a hoot at times.

The film has two screening this week Friday and Saturday evening in Toronto then moves to Ottawa and Montreal.  This is the perfect Valentine Day’s film for males unable to get a date.  (Just kidding!!!)
