Hal Hartley to direct HENRY FOOL 2
July 7th, 2005 by Cinema Eye
At a recent Apple Store event, cult favorite director Hal Hartley announced his plans to leave the U.S. and start work on a sequel to HENRY FOOL. Tentatively titled FAY GRIM, Parker Posey will star as the wife of Henry Fool seven years after the events of that film. The film will be shot in Paris, Berlin and Istanbul. On his move to Europe, Hartley said: “I need to work and I can’t work here. It’s impossibe to make art film in America, particularly in New York. Its just too expensive to make work here, if you want to pursue work that is based on your interest you can’t necessarily be tied to being a commercial success and thats all that happens here.”
Hartley’s most recent film, THE GIRL FROM MONDAY, has been picked up by Netflix as part of an exclusive DVD release. This is the second film distributed by the on-line rental company. The first was Tim Robbins’ EMBEDDED LIVE. The film will be available starting July 19th. (via movies.yahoo.com)

A cow-orker of mine who knows what a complete fanatic I am about Hal Hartley’s movies (especially Heny Fool) told me over lunch today that a sequel of that film is planned. My immediate reaction was to leap from the table, upending our lunches and drinks and shout “no freakin’ way - you’re yanking my chain!” Reading here that this news is not a cruel phantasm from a twisted mind has given me a reason to carry on with the charade of life. Finally (perhaps) I can settle the burning question raised at the conclusion of Henry Fool - which way is Henry running?
I can comprehend Hartley moving to where art is perceived less fiscally. I’ll miss him, and wish I were going too. All I ask is that he keeps tapping the talented bands of the Hoboken area for his scores.
