Hot Docs - The September Issue in October
September 24th, 2009 by Gilbert Seah
Hot Docs is pleased open the 2009-10 season of the Doc Soup monthly screening series with the Canadian premiere of THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE (D: R.J. Cutler, USA, 88 MIN), which offers both an extraordinary behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the style industry’s bible, the September issue of Vogue magazine, and an unprecedented gaze into the life of fashion icon Anna Wintour.
Touted as “riveting” by the Los Angeles Times and “a hurricane of fabulousness!” by New York Magazine, THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE will receive its Canadian premiere during Toronto Fashion Week, on Wednesday, October 21, at 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. at the Bloor Cinema, 506 Bloor Street West. Filmmaker R.J. Cutler will participate in a Q&A after the screening via Skype.
Every August a record-breaking number of people can’t wait to get their hands on the September issue of Vogue. The 2007 issue was and remains the biggest ever, weighing over four pounds, reaching an audience of 13 million, and impacting the $300-billion global fashion industry more than any other single publication. This intimate, funny and surprising documentary exposes Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her team of larger-than-life editors as they create this must-have fashion accessory.
The Doc Soup monthly screening series brings the latest Canadian and international documentaries to the big screen in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Select subscription packages for Toronto’s Doc Soup are still available for purchase. Single tickets for THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE are $12 and can be purchased in advance at http://www.hotdocs.ca or at the door on the night of the screening (subject to availability). A limited number of free tickets for the 9:15 p.m. screening will be available to students with proper ID (subject to availability) at the door, on a first-come first-served basis beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Upcoming screening dates for Toronto’s Doc Soup are November 18, December 16, January 20, February 17, March 17 and April 14. Doc Soup titles are announced at least one month prior to their screenings and, whenever possible, guest directors are in attendance.
