NARNIA poster released
June 21st, 2005 by Cinema Eye
Disney has released the first one-sheet for THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE. You can view the full-sized poster after the jump. This doesn’t seem very impressive to me. Based on this poster, we definitely know that a lion plays an important part, but the rest of it feels like a muddled Photoshop collage. Disney is definitely courting the religious right with this movie, and I wonder if the blandness of the poster has anything to do with it. Use our comments feature to let us know what YOU think.

If you think that’s underwhelming, you should see the trailer. I smell bomb.
I don’t see how this looks any different from other films of it’s type like Lord of the Rings. Oh, I get it, because it has some Christian elements you’re going to deride the film before it even gets to the gate. Wow, I see. I smell success. The majority of people in America claim to be some form of Christian but if someone makes a film remotely aimed at this segment of people you jump on them and try to make life hard for them before it hits the theaters even. But I guess that’s pretty fair considering every film in that comes from Hollywood is Christian right? We’re always talking about people aiming for the lowest common denominator. So someone aims for something higher they get ran out of town on a rail.
I didn’t make a single reference to Christians—I’m deriding it because it looks utterly boring and soulless.
Have we become so jaded and bitter that we are already judging a movie by it’s poster? Everyone needs to just get over themselves. And what is so religious about a witch, a talking lion and the cloven-hooved Mr. Tumnus. Yeah… real Christian.

Really, okay what do you think “Disney is definitely courting the religious right with this movie, and I wonder if the blandness of the poster has anything to do with it.” Means. Who do you think the “The religious right is.” You’re not stupid. And everyone knows the book is a Christian parable otherwise there would be no reason to make this statement.
Harsh Bette Says:
“And what is so religious about a witch, a talking lion and the cloven-hooved Mr. Tumnus. Yeah… real Christian.”
Historically we were fed to the lions by the Romans but the Lion became a Christian symbol later on because Christ is called “The Lion of Judah.” Obviously you’ve never read this book. It’s author was Christian and wrote the story as a parable. The only reason I even said anything is because the poster looks as good as any and if it wasn’t for the Christian connotations to the story I doubt the poster would be being called bland. It’s a children’s book and the poster looks like something Children would get excited about. It’s looks just as good as “Harry Potter.” Try not to be so obvious with your anti-Christian bias next time.
To clarify… I was a big fan of the books as a kid… they are definitely Christian parables… no problem with that. My problem is with Disney’s courtship of the religious right on this and other projects.
Even Donald Wildmon has lifted his ban on Disney, primarily because of this movie. There are numerous other things going on at Disney that back this up. The Miramax split being an obvious example.
And by religious right, I am referring to something more specific that “christians.” I am referring to the specific political ideologies that are currently prevailing.
But from a graphic design standpoint, that poster has no vision and it doesn’t know what it’s trying to sell. Instead it’s throwing all of the elements onto the poster in a big Photoshop mess in hopes of appealing to as many people as possible.
What could Disney or anyone do now days that could express any kind of Christian faith and not be linked to the “religious right”. I am a Christian and not republican but can I create faith based film or art with being lumped in? I don’t know what else Disney may be doing but goodness knows it’s not the worst thing in the world to have some Christian expression along with everyone elses POV. Again the poster looks fine and it looks like an exciting movie. And this is from a person whose not into this kind of film. I didn’t go to see LOR and for the most part am not interested in fantasy films, but if I saw this poster without the connotation it would get my attention. I might not see it but certainly it would get my attention. Isn’t that what advertising is about? It looks exciting.

Believe me, Mr. Cinemaeye has no anti-Christian bias.
Let’s not forget that the real producers of this movie are WALDEN MEDIA who were also responsible for the heart-warming classics BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE. Walden has the rights and is producting, Disney is co-financing and distributing.
I think it is going to be a movie, and “Rick”, you might not be a christian or a disney fan, but I’m both, child. I know a good disney movie when I see one, so keep your christianity-related coments to your self
WOW. This looks like a bunch of Christian bullshit. GO Satan!
way to go Louis, I appreciate the free props! ironically, the whole christian ideal is the thing the “true devil” wishes them to believe, actually I AM the good guy, they just altered the bible through corrupt men and “the church” take a look at the first books of the bible, “the serpent” or the great deciever, you don’t suppose he had a strong hand in altering historical documents to make it suit his needs, what better recruitment is there of threats of death and suffering, and empty promises of eternal servitude and worship if you follow “the lord’s” ways, also, notice how powerful the illusion is? so much, as to cause such anger in a simple movie forum, besides, they can have “heaven”. sounds boring eh? we have cable here in hell, and all the cool people come here, actually i was just talking to ghandi, and jesus, they’re both here, see, jesus was my pal from college and i asked him to try to send some cool study tips and party tricks to the people of earth, and they killed him. then they altered the books to make him THEIR prophet, and it snowballed, and now mel gibson has to glorify his torturous death, and i’m SURE that he’s confessing his sins all the way to the bank eh? Just make sure you are sure which side TRUELY is the right one, when the end comes, “the fastest and easiest fat burning drug on the market” sounds great, but, it just might not work.... how can we be sure? and any religion that must work SO hard at forcing itself on everyone, and is so insecure that they must constantly quarrel with everything and everyone about their “righteousness” ... must have something to be insecure about.... odd… oh well.. thanks for the assist Louis! See ya in hell! I’ll get you a nice room on the beach when you get here!

Well quite frankly, I do believe that judging a movie based solely on the poster isn’t the greatest thing to do. IN fact, I don’t even trust critics anymore because I love some movies that critics totally dissed. And I do believe that everyone in this forum has the right to speak their own mind. But I’d rather keep things to the truth. Hell is no party. “Satan“‘s little speech is as worthless as they come. And he wonders why he’s called the deceiver. God is more powerful than Satan anyday, anytime. Satan is just a trifle upset that he’s damned to hell for the rest of eternity, and he’s maliciously lying to everyone to make it seem as though it is a party and God isn’t worth anything. Wow. Look at what a movie poster can get started.
Oh, and by the way, I read the books, awesome times, I was always freaked out when I read the Voyage of the Dawn Treader when they passed Nightmare island. Could never get to sleep. But the movie sounds amazing! I’m definantly going to go see it. For those who don’t think it’ll be a success, just say that, and don’t pick it apart, or diss Christianity.
God bless.
Karl Juhlke.
i will watch the movie because I simply love the books (I recently bought a Collector’s Edition Volume which is a single tome containing all seven books), not because of its “Christian” messages (I’m not a Christian) or because its author was a Christian missionary.

OF COURSE you judge a movie by its poster! Otherwise, you end up paying $7.50 per movie and go see every movie there is, just so that you can say later, “See how open-minded I am!”
Yes ... judge a book by its cover. Talk with your mouth full. Take some wooden nickels. Bite off more than you can chew. Dare to be stupid!
Lol, another Weird Al fan. As much fun as it seems to actually seems to dare to be stupid, it doesn’t pay off in the end. The poster should intrigue you to look deeper into the movie. But it shouldn’t really judge the movie for you. What really does it for me is the movie trailer. Wow, those really make or break my wanting to see the movie, and it did come out by the way, and it looks amazing! I don’t judge it by it’s poster, but if others do, that’s up to you. Just don’t dare to be stupid.
What really got me is that I saw the trailer for this and it’s no worse or better and Harry Potter and certainly if you’re a child it’s just as intriguing. Why anyone would think the movie smells like “a bomb” is beyond me. As a matter of fact it’s aimed at thesame audience Harry Potter is and looks pretty exciting. That’s what lead me to believe there may be some bias. Movies are judged on the poster and trailer, but both the trailer and poster are good. I dare anyone to honestly say this won’t appeal to the children’s market and many adults. It’s good marketing on Disney’s part. And if you do a trailer for something like this that gets my attention (I’m not that big of a fantasy fan) then you’ve done well.

To those interested in what Satan had to say:
Read “The Screwtape Letters,” it’s better written and more accurate.
Everyone else:
Who really thinks posters draw viewers anymore? Can the general public even read a poster? The trailer will do more to get people to fork over the money to see the film. And the box office will tell us if it’s a success. We shall see, huh?
This movie rocked my socks off! It was amazing! I loved it! But you all who have just looked at the poster or watched to trailer need to go see this movie. Ya the books are christan but the movie really isn’t. Well yes I mean it does but for gosh sake IT IS A MOVIE BASED AND A CHRISTAN BOOK. So deal with it. This movie was great so great im going to go see it for the 3rd time. If you watch the movie you will understand the poster. C’mon I didn’t understand the poster for Lord of the Rings. But I did as soon as I watched the movie. So maybe you all should do that same thing. Spend so money and go see the movie it’s awesome! God bless you and help you for judging something that you haven’t even seen or know anything about. I LOVE THE CHRONICALS OF NARNIA, THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE!!!!! OH and the poster drew me! I want to record it just so I can go home and watch it on my couch over and over again!
