NEW! NFB Advent Calendar – iPad App
NEW this holiday season! The NFB will offer an iPad App Advent Calendar, in which children and parents can discover new film titles daily as well as great classics, such as The Sweater, The Cat Came Back and Noël Noël. This digital calendar provides access to 25 films, unlocked one-a-day, and lots of surprises! The app will be available on iTunes for $1.

Canada Vignettes: A Love Story – Together for the first time on DVD, these 36 vintage gems are from the NFB Canada Vignettes series, which touched a whole generation of Canadians who grew up watching them on television. Made in the late seventies and early eighties, these very short animated films and documentaries introduced us to different aspects of our country’s rich history and culture. Titles include Faces, Delta Plane, Log Driver’s Waltz, Trading Post, Fort Prince of Wales, Bill Miner, Roger Doucet, and Stunt Family. $14.95
THE MEDIATHEQUE ON ICE!
NFB Mediatheque, 150 John Street, Toronto, Ontario
It may be cold outside, but it’s getting hot in here—as young animators get fired up with creativity! Join us this holiday season between December 27 and January 8 for nearly two weeks worth of hands-on animation workshops—our biggest holiday program ever! Try a different activity each day, and animate your favourite winter activities using a variety of techniques including 2D and 3D clay, paper cut outs, object animation and pixilation.
Workshops are offered twice a day, from 12 PM to 2 PM, and from 3 PM to 5 PM, for only $5 per child. Available for children aged 3 to 13. Adults: take part in the action at no extra charge.
Participants can also attend Mediatheque on Ice family animation screenings for FREE! Screenings run from 2PM-3PM each day.
Tuesday, December 27 – Fishy Business
Try your hand at ice fishing just like they do in the North… without even having to step outside! What will you catch? (3D clay animation) Wednesday, December 28 – Skate Mates You won’t ever slip or fall trying to do a double lutz or a triple salchow in this workshop, where you’re the star! (Pixilation)
Thursday, December 29 – Our National Pastime Play hockey just like a pro… well, a pro helped out by the magic of animation! Our referees will show you what to do. (Pixilation)
Friday, December 30 – Watch Your Noggin on the Tobaggan!
Hang on to your hats (and scarves, and mitts) as your sled speeds down a steep hill. (Paper cut out animation)
Saturday, December 31 – We’re Snow Angels Ever made an angel in the snow? This workshop will let you make all sorts of extra heavenly creatures. (2D clay animation)
Monday, January 2 – There’s No People Like Snow People Just like regular humans, snow people come in all sort of different colours, shapes and sizes! Create your own one-of-a-kind frozen friend. (3D clay animation)
Tuesday, January 3 – Frozen in Time
Make your own dazzling, crystalline sculpture! And the best part? Our ice won’t melt! (3D clay animation)
Wednesday, January 4 –Igloo-palooza!
Build an igloo, a castle, or a snow fort… almost as if by magic! (3D clay animation)
Thursday, January 5 – Snowflakes (Paper Cut Out)
Create your own one-of-a-kind paper snowflake for our animated blizzard!
Friday, January 6 – Winter Carnival
It’s never too cold for a parade! Bundle up and join the procession. (3D clay animation)
Saturday, January 7 – Snowmobility
Strap your characters in safely and start the high speed sled race! (3D clay animation)
Sunday, January 8 – Snow Global Village
Make sparkly snow sprinkle over any background you can think of. No shaking required! (Object animation)
Still looking for more holiday fun? Drop in any time during Mediatheque on Ice and visit our Interactive Lounge for a free Frame by Frame pixilation activity, based on the classic NFB film How to Build an Igloo. Add to the walls of our frozen abode, or get cozy inside by the “stove”—it’s up to you!
