Night Mayor - Online
April 15th, 2010 by Gilbert Seah
The National Film Board of Canada adds to its online collection today with Guy Maddin’s Night Mayor. Presented in HD, Night Mayor is Maddin’s first film to be added to an official online collection.
“I thought Night Mayor could unspool luminously and infinitely in its own enchanted, and frequently visited, corner of cyberspace,” says Guy Maddin. “Now, if only I could get my films on radio and Telex I’d really be set!”
Night Mayor can be viewed at http://www.NFB.ca/hd/night_mayor/. It was recently awarded the Short Film Jury Award for Experimental Short at the 2010 South by Southwest (SXSW).
Night Mayor tells the tale of Nihad Ademi, a Bosnian immigrant who serves as Winnipeg’s “night mayor.” Ademi somehow harnesses the multi-coloured waves of the Aurora Borealis and uses its power to broadcast images of his beloved adoptive country to its identity-starved citizens from coast to coast. In Night Mayor, produced by Joe MacDonald of the NFB’s Prairie Centre in Winnipeg, Maddin has created another of his vividly detailed, comical fantasias.
