MONTREAL — “Silk,” the lush period drama starring Keira Knightley and Michael Pitt, was among the big winners at Quebec’s Jutra Awards on Sunday night.
The film - the first from director Francois Girard since 1998’s acclaimed “The Red Violin” - won awards for cinematography, art direction, costumes and sound. The Jutras honour the best in Quebec cinema.
"Continental: un film sans fusil” ("Continental: a Film Without Guns") took home some of the night’s most coveted prizes, including the best picture award as well as best director and best screenplay trophies for Stephane Lafleur.
A quirky look at the intertwining lives of four people, “Continental” marked Lafleur’s feature-length directorial debut. It was also nominated for a best picture award at last week’s Genie Awards.
Roy Dupuis, meanwhile, won the best actor Jutra for playing Romeo Dallaire in the drama “Shake Hands With the Devil.”
Dupuis dedicated his award to his mother, who died recently, as well as to Dallaire and the people of Rwanda.
Best actress was won by Guylaine Tremblay as a woman whose life begins to unravel after she loses her job in “Contre toute esperance.”
“Les 3 p’tit cochons” ("The Three Little Pigs"), about three brothers reminiscing by their dying mother’s bedside, was recognized for having the highest Quebec box office take of any domestic film. It raked in about $4.6 million.
