LOS MUERTOS (Argentina/Netherlands/France 2004) ***
Directed by Lisandro Alonso
LOS MUERTOS is an uncompromising yet lyrical look at the life of an aging man known as Vargas (Argentino Vargas). Recently released from prison, he sets out on a journey through the jungle and then by boat to reconcile with his daughter. But this is a film that shows the world as it actually is, with all its beauty and horrors. The photography of the surroundings is breathtaking. But director Alonso also captures on film, quite a few disturbing scenes like the actual slaughtering of a wild kid (including the removal of all the innards) that he presents to his daughter as a gift.
Though not much activity goes on, Alonso’s film is nevertheless quite compelling to watch.
