Toronto’s Oldest Cinema Reopens as THE PROJECTION BOOTH:
Former Gerrard Cinema Announces Inaugural Programming Line Up and Kicks Off with Pay-What-You-Can Family Weekends
July 15, 2011 (Toronto, ON) - The oldest existing movie house in Toronto, most recently operating as the Gerrard Cinema (at 1035 Gerrard St. E) is under new management, transitioning from Tamil Language Films to become a neighborhood friendly theatre featuring an eclectic mix of world cinema, documentary gems, family films and Canadian indies.
A collaboration between Studio Film Group Principals Jonathan Hlibka and Nadia Sandhu, and Grinder Coffee’s Euan Mowat, the Projection Booth grew out of a desire to support Canada’s vibrant filmmakers and create a truly local cinema with programming designed to appeal to the Leslieville/Riverdale communities.
“The east end has always been a production centre in Toronto and we want to make it easy for filmmakers to preview, test market and screen their films,” says Nadia Sandhu.
The re-imagined cinema will host 2 weekends of pay-what-you-can family themed open houses on July 16-17th and July 23- 24th featuring a selection of classic children’s cartoons from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day followed by a family friendly feature for $3.99.
Official programming kicks off with a run of Conan O’Brien Can’t Be Stopped on July 29th and continues through August with acclaimed feature titles including American: The Bill Hicks Story, Amazon Falls, Littlerock, Beeswax, Son of the Sunshine, Down Terrace, Beauty Day, Bill Cunningham NY, Blank City, The Most Fertile Man in Ireland, Machete Maidens Unleashed and The Robber.
Other highlights include new first run exclusive engagements of the best in World and independent cinema, and Saturday and Sunday matinees of films for the whole family.
Special community screenings of women’s arts doc Who Does She Think She Is? and Tibet doc Journey From Zanskar round out the slate.
