While many Canadians have enjoyed substantial careers in Hollywood, few have enjoyed the remarkable success and longevity of Norman Jewison. TIFF, in partnership with TVO, is proud to present And Justice for All: The Films of Norman Jewison, a retrospective on the works of the master Canadian filmmaker running from Thursday, August 11 to Wednesday, August 31 at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Tackling cutting-edge dramas addressing some of the most volatile social issues of the day – In the Heat of the Night , A Soldier’s Story and The Hurricane – to romantic comedies – Moonstruck – and caper films; from classic musicals – Fiddler on the Roof – to social satires – . . . And Justice for All ; The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! – Jewison is one of the most versatile of contemporary directors.
Jewison has been nominated for seven Academy Awards®, including three for Best Director (In The Heat of the Night, Fiddler on the Roof, Moonstruck) and four for Best Picture (The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!, Fiddler on the Roof, A Soldier’s Story, Moonstruck). In total, his films have received 46 nominations and 12 Academy Awards® and he received the prestigious Irving Thalberg Award at the 71st Academy Awards® ceremony in1999. In 1989, Jewison was made a member of the Order of Ontario. In 1992, he was decorated a Companion of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian award. Jewison was presented with the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in 2004.
The series begins with Norman Jewison and Friends, an all-star introduction to the screening of Moonstruck. On Thursday, August 11, Piers Handling, CEO and Director, TIFF, will welcome Jewison onstage at TIFF Bell Lightbox, alongside Moonstruck star Olympia Dukakis and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley, both of whom won Academy Awards for their work on the film.
