(Toronto – October 4, 2010) Just out of the gates from its premiere at TIFF, the Toronto Jewish Film Festival lands a huge winner with The Matchmaker to kick-start its ever popular annual series, Chai Tea and a Movie.
Celebrated Israeli filmmaker, Avi Nesher, sets his latest film in Israel during the summer of 1968. The film – based on the novel When Heroes Fly, by award-winning writer Amir Gutfreund - chronicles a teenaged boy’s navigation of love and sexuality during a time of profound cultural change.
Young Arik, a lover of detective novels, takes a job working for Yankele Bride, a mysterious Holocaust survivor, and matchmaker. Under the guidance of his employer, Arik eventually gets to play the role of detective himself in this coming-of-age tale filled with unforgettable characters.
Avi Nesher was born in Israel and studied at Ramaz yeshiva and Columbia University. He made his feature film debut with The Troupe (1978), followed by Dizengoff 99 (1979) and Rage and Glory (1985). He then worked as a director and screenwriter in Hollywood before returning to Israel to make Turn Left at the End of the World, The Secrets and now The Matchmaker.
The Matchmaker is currently playing in Israel to phenomenal success.
