Beaufort
Director Jopseph Cedar’s (CAMPFIRE) futility of war feature is an examination of the reactions and travails of a small group of soldiers led by 22-year old Commander Liraz (Oshri Cohen) stationed at BEAUFORT. This mountain fortress was captured by the Israelis in 1982 and dates back to the time of the Crusades. The film begins with the fort’s defence and evacuation following higher orders.

Boy A
BOY A is 24 and called Jack. Released from prison from a terrible crime, Jack (Andrew Garfield) aims at a new life with the aid of social worker Terry (Peter Mullan). Based on the novel by Jonathan Trigell and written for the screen by Mark Rowe, the second collaboration between Rowe and director Crowley after INTERMISSION is another assured piece of filmmaking. The film can be considered to be two stories, one told in flashback, of Jack and the other of him as an innocent boy, led astray by a new but vicious friend. BOY A is largely compelling as Crowley and Rowe feeds the audience only bits of information at a time letting the audience piece the bits together like a puzzle.

The House Bunny
Originally titled I KNOW WHAT THE BOYS LIKE, THE HOUSE BUNNY from the writers of LEGALLY BLONDE and 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, works well as the ultimate teen/pre-teen chick flick. Silly and irrelevant but deliberately so, director Wolf, the writers and particularly lead Anna Faris deserve full credit for making this comedy refreshing, goofy but ultimately winning.

The Longshots
THE LONGSHOTS is supposedly the true story of the first female quarterback, Jasmine (Keke Palmer) to play in the Pop Warner football tournament. However, it sure does not feel that way watching Fred Durst’s movie. For one, the film shifts attention from Jasmine to her uncle Curtis Plummer played by Ice Cube in the lead role.

The Rocker
THE ROCKER tells the story of one failed drummer Robert ‘Fish’ Fishman (Rainn Wilson from T.V.’s THE OFFICE) as he redeems himself 20 years later by aiding his nephew Matt (Josh Gadd) in his high school band (A.D.D.). The soul searching journey which ends in his facing of the original Vesuvius band members that dumped him allows director Cattaneo and writers Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky to parody the rock and roll scene.
