In the Name of the King (2008)

Weekend Box Office Director: Uwe Boll
Cast: Jason Statham, Ray Liotta
Country: USA/Germany/Canada
Year: 2008
Score: **
MPAA Rating:

IN THE NAME OF THE KING: A DUNGEON SIEGE TALE is the story of a family farmer named FARMER (Jason Statham) caught in the classic battle between good and evil.  Adapted from the award winning videogame DUNGEON SIEGE, the fantasy action film promises action, magic, romance and CGI wonders – all of which are delivered in sufficient doses.

Farmer tends his land, loves his wife and son and minds his own business.  But when the monstrous Krugs attack, kill his son and kidnap his wife. Farmer is forced to take a stand.  The adventure ultimately takes him to an expected showdown with the main villain, a nasty Gallian (Ray Liotta) cloaked in long leather garb with buttoned shirt and high boots who spurts lines like “Don’t be so melodramatic” though the word melodramatic never existed in medieval times.

Director Uwe Boll’s film plays like a B-action flick similar to the martial-arts films.  This is not surprising as the fighting scenes were choreographed by martial-arts specialist Tony Ching (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS).  These are exciting and though one knows who wins in the two main duels (one between the two sorcerers and the second between the Duke and the King’s general), the script calls for a nice twist at the end of each.
The climax has the heroes banding together to fight an all too powerful villain.  This idea is uncommon in western movies but common in Asian films like DRAGON INN and A TOUCH OF ZEN.

The film is at times clumsy in the editing.  The film’s start has four unrelated segments are hastily cross-cut together.
It is unfair to compare this fantasy adventure to films like LORD OF THE RINGS as IN THE NAME OF THE KING is based on a videogame and not literary works like the Tolkien trilogy.  Still as scripts go, IN THE NAME OF THE KING contains some pretty cheesy lines – most of which, at least are quite funny.  Though not the perfect film - in fact the film contains too many flaws - Boll’s CGI epic fantasy is as fun as a harmless matinee adventure romp and is never boring.  But often that too is not good enough.
