LOVE AND OTHER DILEMMAS is the second romantic comedy (the other one being OVER HER DEAD BODY) opening this month that involves a death on a wedding day. The result of the accident is a grandmother’s curse. Naturally Ginger Shapiro (Gabrielle Miller) is anxious that the unforeseen might strike her groom, Henry (Stephen Lobo) dead on the wedding day. The other dilemmas of the film’s title include the fact that Ginger has been knocked up for 8 months and that she gets robbed, abducted and misled that Henry is dead. The trick here is to see how the film manoeuvres itself towards a happy ending.
Scriptwriter Deborah Peraya and director Di Stefano are fond of setting the characters up in odd situations such as the thief, Emmett (Fred Ewanuik) pushing the pregnant bride in a supermarket trolley or Emmett’s accomplish, Bart (John Casinni)and him getting the stolen chair out the front door. Trouble is that most of these do not generate any laughs. Neither do the verbal intercourse carried on by the actors. A point to note is that not all actors can be comedians.
LOVE AND OTHER DILEMMAS is an example of a film in which the filmmakers have thought they got a novel ideal on paper, but during execution in that things do not turn out as expected. Pretty much the same can be said for the plot involving Ginger’s wedding plans.
