STEP BROTHERS begins with a George Bush quote flashed on the screen. It takes a while for the humour to sink in but ‘the saying’ establishes the theme of what is to transpire. The third and funniest full length feature (after ANCHORMAN and TALLEDEGA NIGHTS) collaboration between Will Farrell and director Adam McKay shows what happens when a mama’s and papa’s boy are forced to become step brothers when their single parents hook up. This is more like forced roommates – they have to share the same room – and anyone who has gotten into a fight with a roommate can identify with the situation.
The script written by McKay, Ferrell and John C. Reilly is made up of three parts – foe, friend and family that describe the state of the two overgrown kids. Actually nothing else matters, but any comedic set-up, toilet humour, sex jokes or high jinx remotely related with the film’s premise are thrown in. Not that this is bad, but the end result is one of the funniest comedies on screen this year. It helps that the three have worked together before thus knowing what works or rather what works the funniest.
Farrell and Reilly are the funniest but the supporting cast of Richard Jenkins and Mary Steenburgen (as the parents) and especially Adam Scott as the Tom Cruise brother look-alike are worthy of mention.
STEP BROTHERS is no intelligent comedy. It belongs to the genre of stupid funny films like DUMB AND DUMBER and THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY. For many viewers like me, many are satisfied to have a hilarious time at the movie no matter where the humour comes from.
