The House Bunny (2008)

Weekend Box Office Director: Fred Wolf
Cast: Anna Faris, Colin Hanks
Country: USA
Year: 2008
Score: *
MPAA Rating:

Originally titled I KNOW WHAT THE BOYS LIKE, THE HOUSE BUNNY from the writers of LEGALLY BLONDE and 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, works well as the ultimate teen/pre-teen chick flick.  Silly and irrelevant but deliberately so, director Wolf, the writers and particularly lead Anna Faris deserve full credit for making this comedy refreshing, goofy but ultimately winning.

The formula is simple.  Take an underdog, in this case Shelley (Faris) thrown out of the Playboy mansion.  Shelly is naturally blonde, obviously.  Socially clueless, she aids the Zeta sorority house as the sorority mother.  While she delivers the Zeta geeks practical lessons on what boys like as well as female individuality, she learns too that her man (Colin Hanks) looks deeper than looks for love.  THE HOUSE BUNNY can best described as ‘Blonde and Blonder’ or ‘Bunny and Bunnier’.

It is interesting to note that the film’s biggest laughs derive from Faris herself.  Wolf milks her talent for comedy well – especially her deep throated voice she uses whenever she utters a name.  This is the film’s running joke which is surprisingly still funny no matter how many times used.  The Aztec party at the film’s climax is quite a hoot as well.  The writers put in a good number of off-colored but not too offensive jokes.

Cameos by Hugh Heffner (playing himself) and Beverly D’Angelo (as the rival Sorority House mother) aid in the fun.  For the type of entertainment THE HOUSE BUNNY is intended, Wolf and crew have delivered a fine film.
