We have all heard it before and the statement is repeated at the start and end of this moving doc on song and spirit: “You can stop the singer but you cannot stop the song!”
Written and directed by Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman, SOUNDTRACK FOR A REVOLUTION is in reality more of a history lesson of the civil rights movement in the U.S. leading to the abolishment of segregation than a movie about music. The soundtrack of the title is still existent and sets to accompany the directors’ commitment in telling their story. Songs heard in the film include the familiar “We Will Overcome” sung with infectious energy that enabled protestors to fight with non-violence and ultimately win their cause. Featuring new performances of these freedom songs by such celebrated performers as John Legend, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean and The Roots, the film couples thrilling performances with riveting archival footage and interviews with civil rights foot soldiers and leaders, including Congressman John Lewis and Julian Bond.
Though loose in its narrative structure, the film is focussed on its goal. The film is an effective reminder of how hard our forefathers (all races) fought to gain equality, spirit and dignity. SOUNDTRACK FOR A REVOLTION is an entertaining, watchable and at times disturbing piece.
