CYRUS (USA 2010) ***
Directed by Jay and Mark Duplass
Filmmakers of low-budget quirky dramatic comedies like THE PUFFY CHAIR and BAGHEAD, the Duplass brothers have another almost perfect premise of a guy dealing with his new romance’s weirdo son for their new comedy CYRUS.
A recently divorced guy, John (John C. Reilly) has just met the lady of his dreams. Molly (Marisa Tomei) is sexy, smart and caring. Only problem is that her son, CYRUS is still living with her and he is making it his mission that John does not make it with his mother. Plenty of opportunity for comedy and the Duplass brothers milk their material to the fullest.
But the Duplass Brothers must be really decent guys in real life, as their film is actually more drama than comedy and everything works out well at the end. The main reason is that all the characters are decent human beings with feelings. CYRUS works well as a romantic comedy with just one obstacle and a real one at that. How come Hollywood has not come up with this idea before?
