A PERFECT GETAWAY (USA 2009) **
Directed by David Twohy
In A PERFECT GETAWAY, two of the main leads are constantly in discussion of the perfect script for a movie. Cliff (Steve Zahn) is supposed to be a questionable successful Hollywood scenarist while Nick (Timothy Olyphant) wants to get into the movie business.
As it implies, the events of A PERFECT GETAWAY would be perfect fodder for a script for a Hollywood movie. Or so it seems! The plot concerns an adventurous newlywed Cliff and Cydney (Zahn and Milla Jovovich) backpacking to a remote Hawaiian beach as part of their honeymoon. They hear about the gruesome murder of another newlywed. When they come across a slightly odd pair, Nick (Olyphant) and Gina (Kiele Sanchez), suspicions arise.
Twohy (PITCH BLACK) who also wrote the script uses all his tricks to come up with the perfect twist at the end. A good twist, it is. Twohy also creates good audience anticipation throughout the film. But there is a limit to the amount of cheating one can do with a script. Once the identity of the killer couple – there are actually a third couple as well – is revealed, the thoughts and actions of that couple, if you flashback through the film, make no sense whatsoever. In other words, the real killer couple argues during the middle of the film if the other couple(s) could be the murderers.
Other than that, Twohy’s film contains lots of gorgeous scenery of Hawaii, gruesome parts (chopping off of digits; teeth removal) and rip-offs (DELIVERENCE) to either satisfy or annoy. Twohy does not give a f*** about the logic of his script. Yet his leads talk about the perfect one. Go figure! Would you trust this man to give you a good movie?
