Bee Movie (2007)

Weekend Box Office Director: Steve Hickner and Simon J. Smith
Cast: Jerry Seinfeld, Matthew Broderick, John Goodman, Renee Zellweger
Country: USA
Year: 2007
Score: ***
MPAA Rating:

The hype is over.  BEE MOVIE opens with the biggest buzz of all animated films this year.  Written, voiced and widely promoted by Jerry Seinfeld, BEE MOVIE is not that bad a feature.  Give and take all the bee jokes, the film has a neat message tucked away with an adventure and lesson to be learnt by the protagonist, Barry B. Benson.

Barry the bee (Seinfeld) has graduated from college.  He is shocked to learn that he has to spend the rest of his life doing one same job in the hive.  At least he only needs to make one decision in life is what his mate (Mathew Broderick) retorts.  He makes a trip outside the hive, and disobeys the one big rule by talking to the human, Vanessa (Renee Zellweger) who saves his life.  Can a bee fall in love with a human?  Can a bee sue the human race for stealing their honey?  Can the earth survive with the change in the eco-system?  These are a few questions answered by Seinfeld in BEE MOVIE.

BEE MOVIE suffers from not having both a real villain and an exciting climax.  But Seinfeld’s observational jokes on industry, work and family (mainly Jewish) and the general ‘bee humour’ provide more than sufficient laugh-out loud humour.  Cameos from the likes of Sting, Ray Liotta, Larry King and Chris Rock add in the hilarity.  At times inventive (the hive construction), occasionally spectacular (when the drone bees take flight outside the hive) and consistently funny, BEE MOVIE is a safe bet for both adults and kids.  And I confess to laughing at most of the bee jokes.
