The title of the new chick flick BRIDE WARS says it all. No need to possess an average IQ to guess the film’s storyline.
Two young girls and pals for life Liv and Emma (the young ones played by Zoe O’Grady and Shannon Ferber respectively) dream of the ideal wedding at the Plaza in NYC. When they grow older, it turns out that their dream of the Plaza wedding comes true. Then only problem is that there is only one space for the wedding resulting in the two having BRIDE WARS.
It may be forgivable for the script by Greg DePaul and Carey Wilson to delve into clichéd territory if director Gary Winick’s (TADPOLE, 13 GOING ON 30) film is remotely funny. But the antics are laboured at best with the two stars Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway giving the impression that they are in the film to show off their good looks. Characters appear out of nowhere. Typical of lady films, the male roles (Bryan Greenberg and Chris Pratt) and underwritten and the men only exist to further the ridiculous plot of to stress the emotions of the two female leads.
The best thing about the movie is veteran actress Candice Bergen in the role of super wedding planner, Marion St. Claire. But she does the best she can though she looks as befuddled in the role just as much as when she discovers that she got the wedding dates mixed up.
While watching BRIDE WARS, the viewer gets the feeling that Hathaway and Hudson are fighting for audience attention. The bachelor-ette party scene with Hathaway dirty dancing in short shorts is more pathetic than funny – except that Hathaway looks really good in them. With this consequence, the result of this contest is a zero for both actresses.
