Click (2006)

Click Director: Frank Coraci
Cast: Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, Christopher Walken
Country: USA
Year: 2006
Score: **
MPAA Rating:

Adam Sandler’s latest comedy, CLICK tells the story of what happens when overworked architect, Michael Newman (Sandler) uses a universal remote to control his life.  CLICK takes a half hour or so to get its footing, in the sense that during that time period, the film is exceptionally unfunny, predictable and irritating by Adam Sandler standards.  The film improves a bit, only because the story takes a weird turn and the jokes get better.  The film’s funniest segment involves Newman winning a Japanese contract at a company dinner (tastefully done and remarkably accurate), but such moments are few and far between.  Eventually, Frank Coraci’s (THE WEDDING SINGER, THE WATRERBOY) film sinks into sentimentality.

Sandler has acted in serious films before, his most successful being the most unseen PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE by Paul Thomas Anderson.  He is not that bad as the pitiful workaholic who attempts his best for the family who somehow never appreciates his hard work.  Oddly enough, Christopher Walken is totally wasted and annoying in the role of Morty, the gadget’s inventor.

CLICK can be described as a very inconsistent piece of work – mixing humour, sentiment and melodrama.  For a family film with a message, CLICK contains quite a few sexual scenes and more containing lewd dialogue.  Kate Beckinsale (as Michael’s wife) dons very skimpy shorts in the night time scenes in the movie. Even the two running jokes – Newman’s dog humping the rubber duck (funny) and Newman abusing the neighbour’s kid (unfunny) says it all.

CLICK might have been more intriguing if the story took a different route by having Michael Newman’s family come to terms with how hard the man of the house has to work and sacrifice his time for the good of the household.  If only there is a remote to fast forward this movie to its end.
