Director: Andreas Dresen Cast: Ursula Werner, Horst Westphal Country: Gernaby 2008 Year: 2009 Score: *** MPAA Rating: |
Brave little movie about two old aged lovers Inge (the excellent Ursula Werner) and Karl (Horst Westphal) who find their CLOUD 9 in their later years. Trouble is that Inge is married to her life-long husband of thirty years, Werrner (Horst Rehberg).
Sounds like the same old story given a different spin to include the elder generation. Age is only relative to the two lovers, as Karl considers himself young at 76, not reaching 80. But director Dresen’s film, which includes lots of candid love making is both poignant and moving for the fact that no matter what age anyone is – every person deserves the right to happiness. And that is the real theme of the film.
Surprisingly, Dresen’s sex scenes are just as erotic as they are moving. He also takes his film out into the open as the characters embark on train rides or attend choir practices. Dresen won the ‘un certain regard’ award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. A sad film about happiness!
