DARFUR is a western region of Sudan that until lately has been largely unheard of. Films like DARFUR NOW have brought the genocide occurring there to be recognized by the U.S. and the world.
DARFUR NOW is a documentary that boasts 6 protagonists from different backgrounds and race. They are an UCLA graduate in Los Angeles, California, a Darfurian woman who joins rebel forces, a Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, a United Nations humanitarian on the ground in Sudan, actor and activist Don Cheadle and finally to a community leader in a West Darfur refugee camp. The film portrays the heroic efforts of six people with a common goal.
Documentaries serve separate purposes. Writer/ director Ted Braun, a veteran doc maker has maximised his experience to create a factual account of the happening in Darfur. His film is most effective when the action takes place in Dardur. He also shows two points of view including the government of Sudan’s in claming that the rebels must be put under control before peace and order set in. Braun’s following scene showing rebels in training is effective in showing that he allows both sides to have their say. What is moving too is to observe celebrities doing their part. Cheadle, George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
DARFUR is a timely piece that calls the audience for action. As the atrocities are ongoing now, the audience has a chance to get into action to do something substantial. DARFUR NOW educates, motivates and activates.
