GHOST RIDER is the devil’s bounty hunter. The devil (Peter Fonda) tricks young daredevil bike rider, Johnny Blaze (Nicholas Cage) to sell his soul in order to rid his father of terminal cancer. Blaze falls again for old sweetheart turned reporter, Roxanne (Eva Mendes) while ridding the human world of the devil and his cohorts.
If the plot is that simple to understand, it still takes Blaze three times to try to explain it to the audience. Perhaps the reason is that it is impossible to believe that the devil or Mephistopheles would recruit a bounty hunter and give him a super-powered bike to serve him. But it is after all, a Marvel comic story, but director Johnson (DAREDEVIL, SIMON BIRCH) and actors Mendes and Cage take the subject matter too seriously. This is Cage’s worst overacting job. Cage is also neither a comedian nor an actor who can deliver dead pan humour, as is required of him a few occasions. The violence, language and gore are toned to a minimum for a comic of this nature.
The special effects are good, no doubt, reportedly $120 million worth, but they serve no purpose in a film that turns extremely boring and monotonous after the first 15 minutes.
