Their first documentary METAL: A HEADBANGER’S JOURNEY charted the origins and plight of the heavy metal culture. GLOBAL METAL is an almost worthy follow-up though it is clear that the filmmakers, Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen had to travel around the globe to keep their material fresh and passionate.
The centre of the piece is again charismatic Sam Dunn, originally an anthropologist whose keen interest in have metal music spurred him to do another study on heavy metal. Here, they leave North America and Europe (Germany excepted) to look at the scene in countries as Indonesia, Japan, China, India, Dubai and Brazil. For heavy metal and non heavy metal fans, this doc is an eye-opener to see how the world unites with this respect. The climax is the big show in Germany though not much of it is seen as expected.
Heavy Metal is seen as an outlet to be unconventional. Yet this film is conventional in nature with a conclusion drummed in by Sam Dunn to the audience how heavy metal unites the world. GLOBAL METAL is not as educational as the earlier HEADBANGER’S JOURNEY though both films demonstrate the same enthusiasm on the subject.
