Jack Brooks (Trevor Matthews) is a plumber loser who should have attending a course in anger management instead of science school. His lessons lead him to fix the ***censored*** pipes of his chemistry professor that leads to monsters in the dark.
MONSTER SLAYER the movie goes back to the roots of all horror flicks where monsters attack human beings with great fury. Unlike the recent trend of porn gore and violence, writer/director Knautz’s film has an underlying horror from within, thus creating in the audience a sense of anticipation. The monster itself (reference: JAWS) is not really seen till way into the film’s running time. Though one might argue against the comedic elements diminishing the fright content, the characters and script is inherently funny.
Well performed too is the film by the actors, particularly the role of Professor Crowly by Robert Englund of the NIGHTMARE OF ELM STREET films. His intro piece demonstrating the combustible effects of sodium in his science class is both captivating and hilariously ridiculous.
Knautz’s film is not perfect but close to perfect craziness. The weird beginning takes a while to comprehend and the clumsy double flashback at the start could be polished. Still, JACK BROOKS: MONSTER SLAYER is not only fun but well made, especially in its 60’s look with the fright scenes well orchestrated. The film also contains a message? Jack has to become a monster slayer to overcome his childhood guilt of monsters massacring his family.
